A Canadian province will shut its 24-hour suicide hotline and replace it with one that operates only during business hours.
Prince Edward Island, a small province on Canada's East Coast, says it is too expensive to operate the hotline around the clock. Starting June 1, it will be open only between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.,Monday through Friday.

Unionized apparently. "We are closed. Please committ suicide between the hours of 5pm and 9am. Have a great day"
Leave it to Canada - this is probably the time when there are the least attempts
That is plain stupidity - the bulk of suicides occur on a weekend night, what to they expect the depressed and suicidal to ring during office hours?
"Hello, you've reached the Suicide Hotline. We're closed now, but please select from the following automated menu. If you plan to jump from a bridge or tall building, press 1. If you are using a firearm, press 2. Please note, only firearms registered in the Canadian National Firearms Registry may be used. If you are jumping in front of a train, press 3. You will be routed to Rail Canada for schedules."
"Working 9 to 5...no other time to take a killing..."
Back in the 70's they had a suicide hotline number on the Bourne bridge, over the Cape Cod Canal. The nearest phone was back, 1/4 of a mile, at the gas station on the rotary.
LOL!
Their suicide hotline might not get that many calls because the total population of Prince Edward Island is just 134,557. But they should combine it with one of the other provinces in Atlantic Canada, instead. 9-5 suicide hotline is just ridiculuous.
Operator: "Oh, so you're having a crisis, eh? WELL, I'M ON MY COFFEE BREAK!"
When my brother was a State Trooper, he often had to take a call from a guy who kept threatening to kill himself every Christmas Day. Happened one year while we were still giving each other Christmas presents. Do the people who work for this service take holidays off?
"between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m"
This is a perfect example of why socialism is so useless. I have never seen such inside-the-box thinking.
"I'm sorry, you'll have to call back after lunch..."
"Operator: "Oh, so you're having a crisis, eh? WELL, I'M ON MY COFFEE BREAK!""
Has anybody read/seen Hitchikers guide to the Galaxy?
I wonder what happens if the call is taken at 4:55? "You've got 5 minutes to change your mind, otherwise I gotta go walk my dog, just put in brand new carpet."
Well....there go my vacation plans!
Probably....
They always say to call back? Jake
