HUME: All right. Now, there was an assertion by Senator Reid and others that this so-called nuclear option, which would have been a rules change by parliamentary ruling backed up by a majority vote...
WARNER: Correct.
HUME: ... is now off the table. However, let us look ahead, Senator Warner, and posit a situation in which we're past these three judges who were enumerated in the deal, and another of the judges already nominated, or a new one comes along, and Democrats announce they're going to filibuster. What happens then?
WARNER: Well, let's go back to your opening statement. This filibuster rule that we preserved by virtue of this framework clearly in the agreement, and I've got a copy here, the constitutional option, which we call it, is not off the table. And we all 14 understand that. It is very much on the table.
To use an example, we simply unscrewed the fuse. But that fuse can be put back in if we detect that it's not extraordinary circumstances, but we're back to where the Democrats begin to trot out and do a leadership-led type of series of filibusters.
At that point, senators, seven senators of which I was one, any one or more of them may say, "Time out. I'm not satisfied that this is extraordinary circumstances as a matter of good conscience. I'm going to give leader Bill Frist the vote." And then Frist can ascertain whether or not he wants to use that constitutional measure.

Did he start to grow some cojones, or did Liz Taylor get those in their divorce settlement?
This is very re-assuring to read.
Some Republicans may take comfort from the fact that they still have the option of changing the Senate rules in the future if the Democrats violate the spirit of their deal. But, once you have had the votes to win and wimped out instead, there is little reason to think that the weak sisters and opportunists on your side will be with you the next time high noon rolls around.
While members of both parties are trying to put a good face on this political deal and the media have gushed about this "bipartisan" agreement, Republican Senator Charles Grassley was one of the few who called a spade a spade, when he characterized what happened as "unilateral disarmament" by the Republicans.
If it was just the Republican Party that lost in this confrontation, that would be a minor partisan matter. What is of major importance is that the American people lost a golden opportunity that may not come again in this generation."
I had earlier seen someone point out that Warner was talking about a SERIES OF FILIBUSTERS not merely one being a deal breaker to him. But in this transcript, I notice he also included in this LEADERSHIP LEAD filibusters.
That makes me a little more concerned. Hopefully Dewine and Graham are getting the message that this deal better work 100% or they better move quickly to support the rule change. And they better hope there has been no erosion among any other GOP Senators or they may have a lot of political trouble.

I genuinely curious. What is he point of your post to Libertarian in Exile? You just quote back to him part of the identical Sowell quote he posted moments before.
Is part of your post missing?
Sorry, but I DONT believe these 7 dweebs[no matter what the RATS do] are EVER going to pull the trigger. They don't have the stomach for it.They will always find some excuse not to, just watch.
I love Chuck Grassley. I know some here have occasional disagreements with him (I rarely do); he could be described as a "staunch rural Iowan." We certainly know BS when we see it...and we can smell it a mile away too...LOL!
I swap posts with Libertarian frequently. In this case, as it was midnight I took the heart of the quote and posted it, thus self-pinging for future reference, validating and bumping the thread. Was trying to minimize my typing after midnight, alas the shortcut led to a call for more....
;)

Exactly. This is just cover for when they fold.
I can hear the RINOs whining now, "But we have a deal! I don't think they're being too crazy with using 'extraordinary measures,' either!"
He must have been under the mistaken erroneous impression that his actions would be looked upon as heroic, and that's why so many of us are now convinced he's as senile as Robert Byrd and should step down as soon as possible (after we get a Republican in the Gubernatorial mansion in Richmond).
Same message I sent to Dewhine. I also emailed the Ohio Republican Party and told them to find another candidate.
Warner voted this thing in, count him out on any further opinion. He was one of the seven traitors who is now trying to backspin himself out of the deep stinky outhouse pit he is now in. He's standing chest high in the brown stuff and he knows it.
Those who have read the deal said it is explicit that this set of rules codifies judicial filibusters until 2007. Game Over. Bush Administration Power, game over. The rotten RINOs have achieved their goal: destroying the Bush presidency.
And these republican dwarves continue making the rounds of cable shows pretending they've accomplished something worthwhile.
Or they can simply unscrew it again.
If we buy that clap-trap, we're as sorry as the Gang of Seven.
After all, it STILL isn't defined what "extraordinary circumstances" are; we do know, however that
the stonewalling of seven qualified candidates for Appeals Court Judge for over four years
isn't an extraordinary circumstance.
Apparently.
If this were a game of Texas hold-em, the pubbies threw in a Royal Flush while all the demonRATS were holding: a pair of big balls. It's called BLUFFING AND WINNING. What a bunch of stoooooooooooooopid looooooooooooosers.
