WASHINGTON, May 25, 2005 Batteries are the lifeblood of many things electronic. Without them, most CD players, digital cameras and handheld games are essentially useless.

When 12-year-old Lizzy Lulu, of Lancaster, Calif., learned that American servicemembers in Iraq often use these electronic devices, she decided to launch a campaign to collect 1,000,000 "AA" batteries.
"I knew that they would not have enough batteries to keep them running, so I started to collect batteries to send to them," Lizzy said.
"Through this battery campaign we hope to give the men and woman serving overseas a little bit of joy," added Lizzy's mother, Jennifer Petty.
Lizzy and her mother have set up various collection locations in their area and have received batteries from across the United States, Petty said.
All batteries collected will be donated to Operation Gratitude, w......

God bless that kid, she's a sweet little angel.
This is a wonderful report !
I always wonder how one can send items such as these to the troops , if it is your own small idea and you are not part of some organization ?
I am always hearing of these great civic actions , often initiated by big hearted children.
Who does one contact ? How to send such donations ? and to where?
I think all actual unit location is classified , as well it should be , but how do these kids know where to send things?
I am genuinely curious !
AA Ping!! Nascar PING list!
I work for DoD. The amount of alkaline AA and AAA throwaway batteries needed for a one week mission is bulky and cumbersome. They need rechargeable NiMH AA and AAA cells. Frontline soldiers have chargers that operate from larger batteries and AC sources. Many of the new soldier worn devices and rifle mounted devices are using AA or AAA 1.5 VDC cells. Also send in the Eveready L.91 AA lithium cells. It has twice the operating time of alkaline AA cells and the cell design can cope with the high temperature conditions without swelling and leaking. The reason it is not used widely is unit cost. The rechargeable NiMH and the longer life lithium throwaway AA battery is the better product to send to our Iraqi fighting troops. Spread the word freepers!!
great news and advice ! But where to send????
On a similar subject do you know if there a website to list small businesses that offer discounts to the troops. We know of two businesses who want to show their appreciation to the troops. One happens to be an electronics store.
All that is needed to receive the discount is that the person enter their i.d. in the box, that's it!
As suggested by a fellow FReeper, we tried contacting DoD but never received a response.
Thanks for your help!
Dad? Mom? Brother? Cousin? Uncle? Aunt? Those would be my first guess. The next would be a service member is a neighbor or goes to the same church and the bright lad/lass asks a question.
Buddies....? Looks like three very proud BIG-BROTHERS from here.
Read the article referenced by this post. They referenced something called Operation Gratitude. Do internet search with key word Gratitude, battery, collection.
You're right, Proud Big Brothers!
Looks like we overloaded her webpage. Dang.

Either she's TINY (even for a 12 year old) or those GI's are tall. In any case, she has a HUGE heart.
Oooh, I went to her website, and she has cystic fibrosis. That would explain it. Brave young lady!
Come see us at ProudPatriots.org
We currently support several dozen units, ships, and individual soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coasties; our list is constantly growing. We can't give out the addresses, but we do send care packages constantly.
We also run 6 special operations annually that coincide with the holidays. We invite schools and churches/synagogues to take part in sending cards and letters.
What an angel she is...
