Does anyone know how long (from when to when) Democrats had control of both houses of the Congress? I know it ended in 1994, but when did their 40+ years of controlling both houses start before that?
Thanks for any help you can give!

You're welcome. ;)

"When Democrats seized control of Congress and the White House in 1932, Republicans did not necessarily see themselves moving into semi-permanent decline. They retook the House and Senate in 1946 and had every reason to think that they were moving back to parity with the Democrats. When they got the White House as well as Congress in 1952, Republicans thought they had returned to majority status.
But this proved not to be the case, as Republicans lost control of Congress after the 1954 election. It would be another 26 years before they took back either house of Congress, and 40 years before they gained control of both houses."
whats 1994 - 40 or so years
94 - 40?
Okay, I'm being a smart aleck. But as far as I know, it was exactly 40 years because the Republicans captured the Senate in 52 but lost it in 54. I think that may have been true of the House well.
For one thing, the Dems didn't ever have a 40 year reign in both houses because the Republicans held the Senate from 81-87.
So for there to be a 40 year reign in the House, that means the Republicans held the House from 53-55 because of the Eisenhower sweep.

Good grief. Are you too lazy to Google it yourself and help teach your niece in the process?
Actually, they are still running the show up there.
The Democrats had both houses from 1987 - 1994.
The rest is history.
Yep! The 'Rats took control of both houses of Congress in 1954. They held the Senate until 1980, and the House until 1994.
Republicans had the Senate from 1981 - 1987.
However, from 1932 until 1994, the rats ran the house. I don't think there was any period during that time when the good guys had a majority. The dems had the country so filibustered during this period that 1 Republican's vote was worth only about 75% of a democrat's vote in terms of power to elect members of congress.
I would suggest googling this to get the dates more precise and to double check my recollection.
To those who helped, thank you. To "blader"... bite me.
Thanks for the info. Didn't know the GOP held the Congress from 46 to 54. If Ike was so popular, why did the Pubbies lose Congress in the first mid-terms?
Must have touched that third-rail.
Yep, that's how your niece will learn, all right.
BTW, I found the info in a matter of several seconds doing a simple Google search.
You're welcome. But next time ask Pantagruel. :->
Republicans controlled Congress in 1947-48 and 1953-54. They also had the majority in the Senate from 1981-86 - three-fourths of the Reagan Administration.
The Democrats still control both houses. They just changed the letter next to their names to an 'R.'
When I saw the title, I assumed that somebody had fallen off the wagon or lost their house or something.
