What would Jesus do?
That's the question students at Sutherland Shire Christian School were asking themselves after a Bible-reading session last week.
It's unlikely the son of God envisaged the scourge of modern-day music and film piracy.
But the students decided their messiah would have considered copyright violation a breach of one of the all-important Ten Commandments from the book of Exodus: thou shalt not steal.
By yesterday afternoon, a year 12 group had risen to the cause and handed into the school 2000 of their own illegally burnt CDs and DVDs.
The school's business manager, Bob East, said the students had glued most of the discs to a giant wall-hanging as a reminder of the evils of copyright theft.
"On the Monday last week they heard from Exodus 20:15 - you shall not steal - and within a couple of days they said they wanted to apply this Christian principle to the issue of piracy," Mr East said.
"They felt Jesus would not have approved of copyright breaches.
"It was actually done at the suggestion of one of our senior students, who wants to have a career in music. He thought that if he wanted to gain a livelihood from that sort of thing in future then it was the right thing to do."
Music teacher Jon Baldwin added: "The decision taken by the students to honour Christ in a practical way has been a great encouragement to teachers, parents and other students."
Mr East said the issue of music and film piracy had aroused "strong feelings" among his students, in light of the recent court battle between the music industry and online file-sharing network Kazaa.
The network allows peers to swap MP3 versions of songs, allegedly at a huge cost to CD sales.
The industry wants the Federal Court to shut down the site and block any swapping of MP3 files on future Kazaa variations.
Hmmm...but what if the commandments conflict? For example, we have "thou shalt not steal." But if your friend copies his music and sends it to you, that prevents you from 'coveting thy neighbor's property.'
What an excellent example to set!
WWJR?
Matthew 22:21a: and give unto Britney what is Britney's.
Technically, isn't listening to the radio the same as downloading tunes? I thought pirating was distributing the music.
All my pirated CDs are religious music...you know, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Genesis...
Listening to the radio is only stealing if you change the channels during commercial breaks.
What about TIVO'ing or VCR recording television shows?
Will the kids pay attention to the commercials and refuse to fast-forward through them?
I think there are some more clear cut moral and ethical teaching examples that should be taught. For example, thou shalt not kill even if the Democrats say it's OK and act like fools to muck up the consitituion to prevent votes on judges who might also believe it's wrong to kill.
I guess the Commie above is really Mephistopheles himself.
Oh boy...I can't wait to see how some freeper is gonna weave Terri Schiavo into THIS thread. (oops, I guess I just did. Sorry)

Really????
He's done a pretty good job of describing the world at the close of the age.
I think I know what Jesus would do if he were around today. He'd heal the blind, the lame, and even the dead. He'd be able to see into the hearts of those he met and tell them their hidden sins. Then he'd die for those sins, conquer death, and walk on the earth again.
I dunno about you guys, but I'm pretty sure I can't do all that... even if I really put my mind to it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when people say "WWJD" don't they really mean "What Would Jesus Want Me To Do?"
We can find out exactly what Jesus wants us to do by praying. Why do we need yet another pop-culture encouragement to rely on ourselves instead of God?
As believers, we should stop asking "What Would Jesus Do?" and start asking "Jesus, what shall I do?"
Here endeth the off-topic rant.
Me: Forgive me, Father. I have sinned.
Priest: What is it, my son?
Me: I listened to the radio
(silence)
Priest: I see. Were you.....touching anything?
Me: No
(silence)
Priest: I really just don't care. Go home and touch yourself and get back to me.
Is TiVo stealing?
