Yes, I saw the ire that McCain inspired during the 2000 primary season, and its tough to forget. But unless some other Republican candidate emerges out of the shadows SOON, McCain is the only possible candidate that would have the requisite positive name familiarity to get the mushy middle to vote for him.

Elections are won by dragging over the middle, we all see how hard Hillary is trying to position herself there. When push comes to shove, there are a lot of people here who have to admit they hate Hillary worse than they hate McCain. I have to count myself as one of them.

Why is it amazing?

McCain has thumbed his nose at conservatives for years. He has repeatedly supported our domestic enemies. He has essentially gone against the People's will by trying to take away the Republican majority vote in the Senate.

For me, he showed his true colors when he supported john kerry in attacking the POW/MIA families. He has done nothing since to change my opinion of him.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but isn't McCain working with Kennedy on an bill to offer 3-year visas to illegal immigrants?

How do you think that effects your scenario? Seems to me it would turn a large part of the base against him, while possibly erasing gains he made with your hypothetical 'prodigal son' move by jumping into bed with possibly the only politician more hated than Hillary.
