Before we explode in disgust about the RINO defectors, please consider this: IF the nominated judges get an up or down vote, we win. If a nominated judge gets blocked by filibuster again, we can still "pull the trigger" on the constitutional option...this time with "betrayed and outraged moderates" leading the way. As much as I want to just respond to this emotionally, I am trying to show patience to see how this pans out over the next month. I also am looking forward to seeing how the DUmmies seeth as judges are nominated. So, please, "hold your powder" but keep your eye on the target.
gridlockOr the President nominates William Pryor, Janice Rodgers Brown, or Priscilla Owen to the SC. In theory, the signatories to this agreement can't very well claim "extraordinary circumstances" on nominees they say have no "extraordinary circumstances" now. They will break the agreement.
Next is the nomination to the Supreme Court.Unless the President puts up some squishy moderate, it will be the "Extraordinary Circumstance" that will trigger the next Filibuster.
Of course, in the real world, they will find "new information" and still claim "extraordinary circumstances" and filibuster those nominees anyway if they come up for the supreme court.
Not true. There was no point in the Pubs forcing the issue when they knew the 7 RINOS wouldn't show up for them. Those RINOS were led by McShame who's only goal was to usurp power from Frist and belittle Bush.
I understand your point. However, it is our patience that is being taken advantage of. That's exactly what the Dem's want. As we patiently wait, they can sneak tiny bites of political capital and we continuously lose, even after winning elections.
The rats agreement is simply the terms of a retreat. They only get what they would have gotten had they voted for cloture. They would have retained the right to filibuster another day.
Why did 7 GOP join them in giving them cover? I suppose the answers are many. Some probably want to look moderate, some may have common interests on other issues, some may not have strong conservative bases as voters.
I just called Sen. Chambliss' office (my Sen.) so that I could get a better understanding of this deal. The lady I talked with was named "Briton", she said Chambliss did not go for the deal, but this is what happened, we got 3 of the nominees on the floor for a vote today. If later the dems decide to filibuster, then we can and will still use the so called "nucular option". I asked her also if they were familiar with the Free Republic website, and their office was very familiar with us, she said to let everyone on the "Free Rebublic" website know, that if they had any questions to please call Sen. Chambliss office, and they would be happy to answer our questions. Toll free # is 1-877-762-8762.
Are you looking in the mirror again?
Or, the seven seat warmers.
Actually, I'm furious at these RINO's but the biggest part of this whole thing for me was to show the Demwits that their tactics and startegy are through. Well, we didn't end up showing them that, but with all we know about the dems, this will be back as an issue in no time at all.
I won't support any of these RINO's ever again, because they put trust in Dems and thats a suckers bet. They'll be shown for the fools they are soon enough, and it will be a very noticable message to other Repubs that there is voter consequence to hitching your wagon to a donkey.
We don't know that. The matter has not been put to the test (vote) yet. Frist never controlled the timing of the Constitutional Nuclear Byrd option. The option can't be executed until the DEMs actually implement a refusal to vote on a nominee.
I will take a wait and see attitude on this. Any chance McCain had at the Presidency is now dead, and that is a good thing.
I blame Frist for this as well, and I would hope would end any chance he had at the Presidency as well. Frist purposely delayed the big vote which gave time to the RINO's to stab them in the back. Just like Lott, he has no spine.
Also, here's a quote from the White House on this, as per the AP:
The White House said the agreement was a positive development.
"Many of these nominees have waited for quite some time to have an up or down vote and now they are going to get one. That's progress," press secretary Scott McClellan said.
So as I said last night, is everyone directing their fire at the wrong end of Pennsylvania Avenue here? It doesn't sound like the White House is overly upset about this. And IMHO, I think if the White House had wanted to stop that "deal" last night, they have sufficient weapons in their arsenal to apply enough pressure to do so.
Why were there reports that Saad and Myers were going to be thrown overboard in favor of the other 3??
Twelve (or fourteen) arrogant Senators decide that they can determine which judges get a vote in the Senate? BS. I want all 100 Senators to vote on all the nominees.
If the GOP national leadership can't recognize the "Hill to Die On" that is the judicial appointment issue, I have too little in common with that leadership to support them.
If the leadership did properly recognize the issue, but did not have the will, the ability, or the tenacity to enforce party discipline for victory on that issue, than I have too little respect for that leadership to support them.
Either way, I am with you, Laz. I am probably sitting out 2006 and 2008, unless I get a clear shot at punishing McBane, Gay-Rham, Snoweblind, or the other GOP "centrists" in this debacle.
Has the language become so corrupted that "Moderate" is now what you call a liberal and "compromise" is now what "unlubricated, involuntary violation of one's anus" is now called?
Ummm ... "not go to vote?" I think that point is going to be pushed. 14 Senators can't stop it. And the Senate, even though it wants to, does not prevent GWB from sending nominees of his preference.
NONSENSE! 41 Republicans should filibuster Owens TODAY and force Frist to "pull the trigger".
And I'm with you! when the brouhaha about Kerry's
nomination got heated, I went back and tallied up all
the Senate votes in the 107 & 108th Congresses;
McCain voted bootlock step with Kennedy and Kerry
about half the time. He's no Republican in my
book!

The Dems like to play games - I'll believe it when the votes have been cast and certified.
When they call me for a contribution, I say, "Sure. I'll give you $100 for every major spending bill vetoed by the President. Now, how much do I owe you?"
Keep your powder dry and wait for the next betrayal by those useless a$$holes.
Can anyone think of a time when the Democrats had the votes to do what they wanted, yet compromised anyway?
Does anyone have any doubt that had the parties been reversed here, that the Democrats would have killed the filibuster 2 years ago?
The Republicans are spineless and gutless, and regardless of the numbers, are a minority party.
