Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!
This was 7 Democrats (directed by Harry Reid et al.) preying on the weakest of the linguini-spined RINOs. I'm sure they played up all of their worst fears: "No one will like you, you won't get on any talk shows, you won't be called a maverick by the NYT." None of which has The Constitution or principles or constituents anywhere in the argument.
The funny thing is that these politically tone-deaf pols think that this will help them in any election. In Ohio, right now, Voinovich, DeWine, and Taft would lose to anybody the Dems put up. I'm sure it is the same in VA and SC, probably not ME.
To spin this as a win in any sense is pure folly. The Left has been emboldened by what they now see as the soft underbelly of the Republicans. Things will get worse, not better. You have to knock the bully down to win; just avoiding a fight is delaying the inevitable.

In my opinion, the only real victory would be that the president nominates one of these three judges to the US Supreme Court.</p>
I don't think the democrats could stand against him/her after already passing the candidate through once before.
This may be the president's little trick.

I don' think Frist had anything to do with this. The backstabbers were operating on their own. That's the problem, he has no control over the caucus, especially on the important issues. He allows the members to run wild. The republicans should have stood together on this, and Frist is responsible for not leading and is weakened further by this "deal". His presidential aspirations are gone for sure, and now any group of senators can go behind his back, and broker deals on any issue they please.

Was not familiar with the story. Remarkable. For all the other hsitorically challenged posters/lurkers:
"Representative Preston Brooks was Butler's South Carolina kinsman. If he had believed Sumner to be a gentleman, he might have challenged him to a duel. Instead, he chose a light cane of the type used to discipline unruly dogs. Shortly after the Senate had adjourned for the day, Brooks entered the old chamber, where he found Sumner busily attaching his postal frank to copies of his "Crime Against Kansas" speech.
Moving quickly, Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto the unsuspecting Sumner's head. As Brooks struck again and again, Sumner rose and lurched blindly about the chamber, futilely attempting to protect himself. After a very long minute, it ended.
Bleeding profusely, Sumner was carried away. Brooks walked calmly out of the chamber without being detained by the stunned onlookers. Overnight, both men became heroes in their respective regions.
Surviving a House censure resolution, Brooks resigned, was immediately reelected, and soon thereafter died at age thirty-seven. Sumner recovered slowly and returned to the Senate, where he remained for another eighteen years. The nation, suffering from the breakdown of reasoned discourse that this event symbolized, tumbled onward toward the catastrophe of civil war."

"Armageddon has been averted, and thank God," said Schumer, well aware that Democrats could have come off much worse. "Changing rules" in the Senate was considered Armageddon by folks like Schumer.
I guess Schumer decided that "adding rules" was okay.

South Carolina can't do better than this little butt-kissin goober? Graham has been suspect for a long time, now the truth is out! Graham is a fraud. One could expect no better from the other RINOs - but Graham speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Also, send McCain home.

I will contact Ray Hoffman, state GOP chair, and tell him that McCain and Graham better not even think of setting foot in Iowa.
