Star Wars fans burnt by petrol-filled 'light sabre'
By Stewart Payne
(Filed: 24/05/2005)

A man of 20 and a girl aged 17 were engulfed in flames when a home-made Star Wars "light sabre" exploded and showered them with burning petrol.

Mark Webb and Shelley Mandiville are thought to have filled a fluorescent tube with fuel to imitate the weapons in the latest Star Wars film Revenge of the Sith, released at the weekend. But their clothing caught fire and Mr Webb suffered 40 per cent burns.

Firemen were called to woodland near Hemel Hempstead, Herts, on Sunday and found them on the ground. Police think they had been filming themselves.

Last night they were in a critical condition at a specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex.

Oh, I know there's a troll who claims to be everybody's sister or best friend, or whatever, I've seen it a couple of times. But considering how high FR sometimes shows up in Google results, it is also not inconceivable that somebody really is closely related to some news event, then does a search on it, and signs up here to defend their friends.

Plus, this 'stunt' group referenced in the linked articles appears to be web-savvy, if not any-other-kind-of-savvy-such-as-safely-handling-combustible-fluids-savvy, so it's not surprising that members would go looking for news outlet or blog mentions of the incident.

Your friends are a gas.

Were they filming for "JACKASS"?

Should be arrested for attempted impersonation of a Darwin candidate.

I wonder if the troll is part of the "Retardz" production crew? It's a burning question.

No, I'm from a group called DelayedReaction. We filmed with Retardz recently. I just wanted to set the records straight, don't go accusing me of being some bullshitter...

You can check out a video we produced with Marc Webb (also known as Evil-Webby) here:

Think what you want.

Watch the video in the link I posted. Mark is the guy who breathes fire in the guys face and smashes a light tube over my head. Also the guy doing some of the jumps though the burning table.

Why do you find their reaction immature when you folks film your stunts for the very reaction you seek? If you fail to get the specific reaction you desire, it is no ones fault but your own. There are far better ways of getty shock value out of people than to put your life at risk.

I'll watch, but as a new FReeper, you must be aware the continued use of language such as you did in #69 will get you quickly ZOTTED by the mods.

Yeah, but I find the way people are mocking his misfortune disrespectful. Stunts are usually carefully planned so minimal injury is sustained. Its just a tragic accident and I find it rather lame that people are making sad little jokes at his expense.

She did it for some movie she's doing. Apparently, she likes it short too, and might leave it short indefinitely. Shame...

LOL, so you are one of those people who randomly find FR the day "your friend" is talked about in the news.

Dude, that is almost as funny as these two morons, almost.

I was searching for more news links on the story and came across this site.

I don't know how much more proof I can give than posting the vid of us filming together...

"Stunts are usually carefully planned so minimal injury is sustained."

LOL, A sign of good planning is when you seek to sustain (rather than avoid) injury. Looks like a plan well executed. These 'stunts' are entertaining only to juvenile minds.
