I know how much we all want to support our side. I know that many of us are looking for something good in what happened tonight. Sadly, an honest assessment will result in a single conclusion, that tonight the Republican Senate failed the nation, in order to protect themselves from having to take a vote that would determine the future Presidential ambitions of some Senators.
Do not blame the 12 moderates, because we already knew that they could not be trusted. Do not blame the President, and tonight, you cannot even blame the Democrats. Their side did their job, which was to win. Our side did not. I am not posting this to bash the Republican Party, I am posting this, because I already see some of us looking for the silver lining in this turd. Do not do that. Face the reality of the situation, which is that Senators care about Senators. Bill Frist had ample opportunity to change Senate rules prior to the formation of the 109th Congress. He also had ample opportunity to pull the trigger weeks, even months ago. He did not, which is why I said in an earlier post, that would not vote for Frist for President no matter the outcome of events.
Unfortunatly, we have no recourse. We cannot give up the Senate in an attempt to punish the Senate Republicans. We cannot afford to cut off our noses to spite our faces. But the time will come, where we will have a chance to make our voices heard. Not tonight, not 2006 but maybe by 2008 we will have the voice, the organization, and the attention of enough minds to truly punish the Senate for what they did tonight.
Keep your powder dry, and wait for these folks to come into range. Save your ammo for now. But one day, we will make them pay.
FMCDH(BITS)
First, Democrats will not stick to the agreement.
Second, Bush put up 10 judges, and Senators do not have the right to effectively make decisions for him.
If you really believe that any Democrat is going to go against their leadership, please buy my bridge out back.
We should celebrate a little. We just got 7 judges to agree not to support the filibusters. We got 3 judges that DU ers hate. And if they filibuster if they vote to filibuster, we can still nuke them. And we didn't have to do away with the proceedure in case we need to use it some day :)
If they are crowing we have been screwed.
If they are going ballistic we may have stuck it to them.
Man, I am LIVID!!!
The Republicans are pathetic.
You are misreading what happened.
This is not and never was about keeping the filibuster for the Pubbies because the Pubbies would never use it. If McCain and Company (The Suckup Six) would have left well enough alone, the Dems, knowing that Frist had the votes to pass the nuclear option, would have had no choice but to support cloture on the Owen nomination and any nominations that would follow. That was the Dems secret weapon to avoid the nuclear option - just don't filibuster and you will never get nuked by Frist.
So what do we have instead? The Dems are going to vote for cloture on Owen and the two other biggies. That ends the filibuster and avoids but does not eliminate the threat of the nuclear option. The two sacrificial lambs allow the Dems to save face. It was unnecessary but that's life. The nuclear option is still there and the Dems and the Suckup Six will have to try to make another deal come Supreme Court time. And then there will be another deal and then another and another. In the end, the nuclear option will never be exercised because the Dems can always avoid a vote by ending the filibuster. They will do that until the day that they get a couple more RINOs to move to their side. There is a fair chance that will happen. What a way to do business.
The KKKooks at Daily KKKos only think they won cause some here are freaking out.
How would you like to be reid right now with 7 of your 44 having just agreed not to vote for your filibusters?
We control the Senate.
We control the Whitehouse.
We don't control spit.
Only on an alternate universe could that be possible.
"The next time the Dummies are in the majority, they'll change the Senate rules on Day 1"
Then why didn't they during the 50 years they controlled congress?
I believe we will be
shown numerous displays of spineless Repubs caving into dems over the next few years; enough to remind us who not to support in 2008.
Yep. It's sad and I'm mad. And I'm not about to 'look for the silver lining on this turd'. Excellent choice of words. LOL
Where's my Pukin Dog Good Rant ping, PD?
Sadly McCain was the leader today.
I'm pretty ticked off here. I have been writing senators. I hope it isn't too late... NO COMPROMISING! Republican senators need some cajones!
"we got three judges."
We haven't got any yet, i'd almost bet that McLame, Snow, Chaffee, etc. will vote against the 3 when the vote comes.
The only thing we can hope for, is that Bush gets freaky on those jerks, and makes them pay.
Yep... we've got a number of people here who don't understand politics. Nukeing them isn't really a good idea. It's what we have to do if they filibuster, but if we can persuade them not to filibuster and get up or down votes for our judges, that is the best outcome. Right now that's where we are. If they resort to filibustering again, then we nuke them.
