Radio Jock Holds Abortion 'Contest'
Catholic.org ^ | May 22, 2005 | Matt Abbott

From Anne Newman of Operation Outcry:
Silent No More (www.operationoutcry.org):

"Earlier this week [of May 15, 2005], shock jock Elliot Segal of Washington, DC's radio station DC101 decided it would be hilarious to hold a contest with a prize for the listener who had the most abortions. While this contest was disgusting by its very nature, the offense was compounded because he held the competition on public airwaves during early morning hours, when people are driving to work and bringing their children to school. The 'contest' featured at least one potential statutory rape, two medical assaults and a number of callers proud of the children they had aborted.

"One caller, identified as K-Dog, proudly asserted that he was responsible for 16 abortions between two different women. K-Dog's second wife called in to proudly verify the 5 abortions she had with him. Graphic descriptions and crude jokes were included. Such depravity has no place on public airwaves.

"DC101's parent company, Clear Channel Communications, won applause last year when it dropped Howard Stern because he was deemed too offensive and controversial. It appears this brief dance with decency was merely a publicity stunt, as Stern alleged at the time.

"Please contact Clear Channel and ask them to send a message by firing this schlock jock."

"Incidentally, I don;t recall the Greaseman ever "giving the Okay" to drag Black people (or anyone else for that matter) behind trucks."

on the James Byrd Jr murder in Texas.

"Tracht played a Lauryn Hill song and then said, "No wonder people drag them behind trucks." "

Yup no difference there, move along nothing to see.

This is sinking to an all new low. What I'm now afraid of is this little sickening stunt will help him go national.

K-Dog?

Hmmm.

Sounds as though the gentleman may be involved in the "personal pharmaceutical" trade. Or perhaps a match-maker for hour-long relationships.

What's the prize for winning this contest? It SHOULD be sterilization and free STD test.

Clear Channel Communications

They have been responsive sometimes, but, don't hold your breath. This is the prople who brought you Bubba the Love Sponge, and fired him when he was a LEGAL liability. This is the guy who brought the listeners of Tampa live on the air sex.

Eliot is generally pretty funny. I listen to his show in the mornings and highly enjoy it. Yes, I did think this was tasteless and offensive so I just flipped the station.

There are a lot of comments here on FR about not needing a 'Nanny State' telling us what to do or who knows whats best for us. This the same kind of thing. I like Eliot; when he gets to crass/offensive for me I change the station. If you don't like him don't listen, change the station. Don't demand he be taken off the air when there are many who do enjoy his show. When it comes to YOUR radio, YOU have the power to change the station. No one is forcing you to listen to something you find offensive on your radio. Again, if you don't like it, listen to a different station; thats what I did.

"and bringing their children to school."
Kids shouldn't be listening to Eliot so if a parent has him on with their kids around thats bad parenting, not a bad broadcaster.

I'm reminded of a "Midnight Express" scene where an unrepentant character Billy Hayes (played by Brad Davis) cannot bring himself to say anything nice to get him out of a Turkish prison. Because he's neither gracious to his judge (who wants to set him free), nor tempered enough to keep his mouth shut, he awards himself with about 30 additional years of prison time on top of the 5 or so he's already served (I can't remember all of the details).

Thus, I see the similarity with radio shock jocks who can't alter their performance. It's a vanity that I've also seen in my character (hopefully only in the past).

(Oliver Stone has apologized for the "over dramatized" movie script.)

i listen to him and didn't hear this segment, but find it hard to believe. he has a 14 mo, and his cohost gave birth back in February. He has Shep Smith, Rick Levanthal, Ollie North etc. call in with regularity to discuss issues. this is not at all a Greaseman, Opie and Anthony type show. i agree that the article may be overstated.

"It's local, DC and recently Richmond."

Thanks. I was wondering if it was the same guy my son listens to sometimes, a synicated guy who gives sleazy advice on sex and relationships. Don't know his name.

i've got to say that this is a broadcast that could go either way.
i don't know the dj, but i could see a program like this being used to make people aware that there are people out there who are *proud* of killing unborn children. and have done it numerous times. as a "shock" tactic, it could have merit to sway fenceline people to vote prolife.
on the other hand, since its DC, and what some people are saying, i'd guess it was just a shameless attempt at boosting ratings.

No, this freak makes Howard appear adult and contemplative. America has degenerated so far that now Evil struts proudly around the nation ... and has far too many clueless worshippers, like this radio jockey. But even as sick as this radio freak's perspective is, I'm sickened at the listenership who tolerate and 'enjoy' this sort of dehumanized and twisted garbage which makes entertainment out of the evil of serial killing alive children in the womb. THIS is the legacy of the current democrap party and their leadership who empower their agenda via abortion defense.

So, I guess the "nanny state" shouldn't try to stop anyone from killing their babies in utero...If you have no problem with this crude celebration of death coming through the public airwaves you are siding with evil, imho. Sometimes even libertarians need to say "enough"!

If you can't tell the difference between the 2, I'm not going to help you out with it. Have fun reading the headlines and having others think for you.

I never said I "have no problem with this crude celebration of death coming through the public airwaves." I changed the station because I didn't agree with or like what he was saying. I find it sad and pathetic people actually responded, proud of their abortions. I just don't think Eliot should be taken off the air. This is not a daily topic, nor is it his norm to be this crass.

It is my opinion that he did this purely for shock value as some months ago Eliot celebrated the birth of his first son Dylan; even more recently his co-host Diane celebrated the birth of her first child.

Liberals should hate this show a lot more than conservatives, since liberals have made such an effort to insist that people like the "contestants" don't exist. ;)

Remembering the days when a DJ would lock himself in and play "Feelings" for 24 hours as a PR stunt.

The DJ ought to loose his job and the station very heavily fined for this disgusting, nauseating broadcast. Just when you think there is a bottom to bad taste, something like this happens!

Like a black hole, there is no 'bottom'. Sadly, people are actually proud of their sins. Abortion is nothing less than human sacrifice.
