U.N. official calls U.S. 'ungainly giant' (Malloch Brown, Kofi's mouthpiece)

NEW YORK (AP) - Secretary General Kofi Annan's chief of staff called the United States an "ungainly giant" that only plays by its own rules, criticizing the U.N.'s largest donor in unusually strong terms Sunday.

Mark Malloch Brown said the U.S. contributed most to the development of international law in the last century, but was now the country most opposed to international constraints.

"This ungainly giant of a nation that has led the world in advancing freedom, democracy and decency, cannot quite accept membership in the global neighborhood association, and the principle of all neighborhoods - that it must abide by others' rules as well as its own," Malloch Brown said at the commencement address to Pace University law students.

Malloch Brown's comments, provided to The Associated Press by the university, were unusually forceful for an organization whose leaders tend to abide by an unwritten rule of not criticizing member nations.

But Annan himself has responded more energetically in recent months to U.S. critics of the United Nations who have focused on the U.N. chief and the world body as a whole following embarrassing revelations stemming from probes of the United Nations' oil-for-food program and other scandals.

Earlier this week, a congressional committee drafted a bill that threatens to withhold tens of millions of dollars in dues from the United Nations unless the world body conducts wide-ranging reforms. Malloch Brown and several other officials have said the idea will only isolate the United Sates.

Malloch Brown noted that the United States has already set itself apart in its opposition to the International Criminal Court and the Kyoto treaty seeking to mandate reductions in emissions. But, he added, "nor, admirably, will it accept other compromises in the pursuit of freedom and liberty."

Pot. Kettle. Black.

At least the US plays by its own rules--unlike the UN.

Well then, I guess it's time for the UN to re-locate!

The price of greatness is the pettiness of the UN.

Excellent news. Now let's withdraw all our funding and get out of the UN.

Ditto. We need to demand from our Senators that we get out this organization as soon as possible. The UN is the cesspool that will drag down the entire world.

Why don't we try to find out how this corrupt, incompetent and fraudulent outfit will continue to exist without the wasted tax dollars of support by this "ungainly nation"?

This individual should be held to account for his statements. Why should we submit to ICC or Kyoto if we haven't agreed to them? Consensus doesn't mean Europe and the UN dictate to the US. And the UN will not act on collective security issues like Iraq, Iran, North Korea, etc.

If we stopped financial support to the u.n. they would have to hold their security council meetings in the banquet room of Tiny's Bar & Grill...

So....let me get this straight.....the U.S. basically funds the UN.....and they slap us in the face for it....and it's WAAAAAAAAAAAY past time that we kick them out of the U.S.

membership in the global neighborhood association

Considering the contempt I hear used when talking about the the petty tyrants and busybodies of neighborhood associations, I don't think he picked the most flattering metaphor for the UN. Also probably not very accurate because I've never heard of any neighborhood associations scamming billions or allowing genocide under their noses. Also very few goats have been raped by neighborhood association peacekeepers.

Southerners tried that once...

The UN is the cesspool that will drag down the entire world.

Naw, it'll just waste a bunch of money, the world is resilient.

According to Pepsico's CEO, the US is the world's middle finger. I suggest we flip it at the UN. :)

"If we stopped financial support to the u.n. they would have to hold their security council meetings in the banquet room of Tiny's Bar & Grill..."

And what would be so awful about that? I think they should
hold their security council meetings somewhere on the continent of Africa or Europe.

I say fine. They're all upset because we've stood up and said they are all crooked and we're going to call them on it. They don't like us? Fine, then. Take your great big United Nations and move to some other counrtry that will appease you. We can put our money to good use somewhere else. You need military might? So what. We're just going to isolate ourselves and you can defend yourself. Bunch of big whiny kids. It's time we're done with these jerks for good.
