TROY, N.Y. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton told graduating students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute today they shouldn't let politics interfere with the pursuit of science. In her commencement speech, Clinton said she fears the proud American tradition of free inquiry in both science and democracy has been threatened in recent years. She said interference in publicly funded science, the suppression of scientific evidence and the politicization of scientific advisory panels are all on the rise.
The New York senator said -- quote -- "At the root of democracy is free inquiry, open debate and dialogue.
"What happens in a scientific laboratory, where people are searching for answers to difficult questions, must also occur in a democracy."
Although the former first lady received a warm welcome from the crowd at RPI, one heckler shouted, "It's your war, Hillary!" in an apparent reference to Iraq.
Between five and 10 college Republicans at a nearby street corner protested Clinton's selection as commencement speaker.

I hope to find her full speech, I'm sure it's stocked full of goodies.

Does this mean the Left
will stop protesting space probes
with nuke power cells?
To: OXENinFLA
Good grief. She will come out in favor of flush toilets next. And you notice those exact numbers given for Republican protesters. If the situation were reversed they'd have interviewed every one of them and pretended there were hundreds.

The unspoken assumption behind such remarks, which she knows her college audience will pick up, is that Christians, like George Bush and the idiots who voted for him, are fundamentalist kooks.
Next week, no doubt, she'll go to a Christian venue and give them quotes from the Bible.

Government funding of science is sure to set us back as politicians and bureaucrats make political choices.

At the root of democracy is free inquiry, open debate and dialogue. Well that settles it. Harvard is a threat to democracy.

Dr. Mengele NEVER let little things such as politics or ethics get in the way of HIS scientific research! I'm sure Hillabitch would agree with his rigorous "scientific method" no matter what Republicans might say.

You've got to be kidding me..........
Honorary Degrees In addition to Senator Clinton, Rensselaer also conferred an honorary degree on Paul A. Volcker, Robert T. Coonrod, and Joé Juneau '91.
Paul A. Volcker
Paul A. Volcker was chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1979 to 1987 after serving for four years as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He served in federal office under five presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan. Volcker currently is presiding chairman of a special committee investigating the United Nations Oil-for-Food Program. Volckers father, Paul A. Volcker Sr., graduated from Rensselaer in 1911 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

Well, the administration keeps letting these charges go by without responding, and I think that is dangerous
How the Democrats have gotten away with being the "Party of Science" is beyond me. Just look at the super conducting collider or the suppression of Aerospace initiatives during the Clinton years.
They need to get up in front about this.
Not to sway the scientists on the dole - those that are Dems cannot be swayed - but not to get tarred with the label. As the environmental ravings get louder this is more important.
It is bizarre as Bush's science policies are the best I have seen since, well, Ronald Reagan.
I write letter all the time to science policy people in the Administration but they do not seem to get it.
Of course, this institution is highly liberal and a captive audience=, but still, they really need to get out there.
It is sad who the left has even corrupted science. If we ever do turn the tide, it will take decade to clean up the mess that the left has - and the Clintons in particular has made.
Right now the Dems are winning this new PR war branding the GOP as somehow ignorant and supperstitious when in fact the scientific community has plenty of conservative in it.

After all, you can't legislate morality. Science is best done when there's absolutely no regard for who might be harmed in the process....unless they're a tree or some species of rat.(/sarc)

Someone should get that out to a prominent blogger.

I eagerly await for science to start sterilizing the feeble minded. (AKA The Kennedy Family)

After all, you can't legislate morality. That really has been their mantra ever since I was in high school ('70s).

Interesting.......
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 10, 2003
SCHUMER, CLINTON SECURE $750,000 FOR RPI CENTER FOR QUANTITATIVE & COMPUTATIONAL BIOSCIENCE
Senators announce that Energy and Water Conference Approves $750,000 for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
US Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton announced today that they have secured $750,000 in new money for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The joint House-Senate Energy and Water appropriations committee came to agreement late last week on a spending bill that will send the money to RPI for creation of a Center for Quantitative and Computational Bioscience.
"Getting this center built will only further cement the Capital Region's standing as home to some of the most cutting edge research going on in the country," Schumer said. "It's a great investment for RPI and New York. As our scientific and technical capabilities blossom, this industry has a real chance to grow in the Capital Region, and that could attract new companies to move to the area."

I told all 16 slaves on the plantation that you can't legislate morality-just before knocking my wife around for trying to vote. Hope there's still some bathtub gin left.
Man, that's got to be the dumbest parroted leftie line on the planet!
