NEW YORK, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles Mayor-Elect Antonio Villaraigosa accomplished what Democrats dream of doing nationwide: he energized Latino voters to turn out for him at historic levels and stitched together the sort of multiracial coalition that has often eluded less-gifted politicians, Newsweek reports. In the May 30 Newsweek cover "Latino Power" (on newsstands Monday, May 23), Miami Bureau Chief Arian Campo-Flores and Chief Political Correspondent Howard Fineman assess the impact of Villaraigosa's election on national politics and the Latino vote. Though they won the Hispanic vote last November, Democrats lost ground to Republicans for the second straight presidential-election cycle. To remain viable as a party, Democrats need to win Latinos back. At stake is nothing less than control of the presidency and Congress. If the GOP maintains its current share of the Latino vote, "then the Democrats will never be the majority party again in our lifetimes," Simon Rosenberg of the New Democrat Network, tells Newsweek.

"As with the Irish, so too with Mexican-Americans, as Villaraigosa's comfortable margin of victory in the Los Angeles mayor's race attests," Rodriguez writes. "Villaraigosa, a onetime militant campus activist, fashioned his first race for the mayoralty in 2001 around a labor-left-Latino alliance. He lost. Four years later he broadened his message, built a more ideologically moderate multiethnic coalition and won by nearly 20 percentage points."

You're taking the long term view. If more people were capable of that we might have a future.
"Hispanic: related to or derived from the people or culture of Spain; 'the Hispanic population of California is growing rapidly'"
Normally I trust what you say, I'm sure I've read what you have done as a minuteman? However, can I ask who you are voting for as Anglo-Saxon European of the year? Why should one type of heritage take precidence over another? Who are you voting for African-American of the year. I thought this was America, the melting pot where all people are expected to assimilate and we judge people on their character rather than the color of their skin. I believe all this racial stuff is detrimental to our society.
More BS from NW...the turnout of registered voters was just over 30%...of that Villaraigosa captured 58%. Not so much that the voters where voting for Villa, but rather voting against Hahn...regardless, the results stand...but Newsweek is really embellishing the results.
I don't know about other states, but those in California who are mad as hell about illegals are voting with their feet. They are leaving California (or at least Los Angeles) in droves. (Now many are finding that their new neighborhoods are being invaded, as well. They can run from this invasion, but they cannot hide.)
Besides, in this particular election, we had no choice. Hahn is the one who proudly proclaimed that Los Angeles is "a Mexican city." He isn't much better than Villaraigosa.
It is going on regardless! These are MALDEF kind of folk. I am a Latina they need to hear about who has stood against everything they stand for!!
I am a conservative Latina who is on the right side of the issue.
I have stood along other freepers , FReeping Hilary ansd organizing a rally for our troops when the war broke out.
It is NOT about me!! It is about the message we are sending to these freaks!
However, can I ask who you are voting for as Anglo-Saxon European of the year?
Jim Gilchrist and Tom Tancredo!
Maybe even gubamyster and Hijinx!!
OK, I can see where you're coming from. You are trying to send the message "it's OK to be Latino and be conservative" and you prefer a Latina conservative to win rather than a left wing type Latina.
"long term view"
The scary part is that we are talking they may control those states by the next election in three years.
bttt
Everyone I know is either leaving or mapping out their escape. It won't be another border state for me, either.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!

Dear Newsweek - please google 'Tom Bradley'.
Then try 'Gene Biscaluez' and 'Leo Carillo'.
It's not the 'multiracial' part I'm worried about, it's the MECHA before the other multiracials that worries me.
Oh, we're raising questions alright. However, our questions and comments are being quickly hushed up.
San Fernando Valley came very close to doing it already. I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen there and in the South Bay area.
I have never understood the mentality of the Mexican national that escapes the hell-hole his own government made for him, then trashes the nation he escaped to, in order to prosper.
Viva el Mexico is fine, but when it takes over California, California will revert to Mexican standards IMO.
Me either...
You can always tell if an article is slanted to the left by use of the word "Latino" versus "Hispanic". Most of the Hispanics I know call themselves "Hispanics" and not "Latino".
Of course, the fact that it's in Newsweak was a big clue too.
You will have support from this Pennsylvanian one way or another. I will not give this country (all of it) up without a fight.
I can't imagine that someone as weak-kneed as Bush on immigration could capture the Republican nomination in 2008. Let's pray not. He's been, and remains, a disaster on protecting our borders.
