Senate panel eyes Japan nuke option to press China on N. Korea test

By Kohei Murayama

WASHINGTON, May 20 Kyodo - U.S. policymakers should highlight Japan's possible nuclear pursuit and other security repercussions for China in pressing Beijing to stop North Korea from testing its nuclear weapons, a Senate Republican policy panel said in a recent report.

''A test in North Korea would certainly raise the prospect of a major public debate in Japan over whether to turn its latent nuclear capabilities in its civilian and space sectors into an overt nuclear weapons program,'' the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee said in the report distributed to senators this week.

While also pointing out various other ''far-reaching'' effects on the security and political dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region, the panel said, ''It's not too late to avert a North Korean nuclear test. However, the key to preventing a nuclear test lies primarily on China.''

The concept they are raising is not a surprise, but it is significant that they publicly raised it at Senate.

N. Korea is causing a major geopolitical realignment in E. Asia. Once N. Korean regime disappears into the dustbin of history, we still have to grapple with what it has left behind for a long time.

Why don't we just GIVE Japan a few missles with MIRV warheads. This should save them some time, to say the least.

Japan should go nuclear. It is in their short term and long term interests. China is in essence of fascist state and will likely become more aggressive. Japan cannot rely on a Democrat president to defend their interests.

With Japan and India nuclear, China's aspirations of regional hegemony will be limited (even with a feckless US president).

I'm still trying to understand why we give Egypt 750 million dollars a year. That would certainly pay for quite a few US border guards.

That is exactly how I read it too, TLR.

There is nothing more chilling than the thought of NORTH KOREA with nukes ready to go on their ICBMs....except for the thought of Japan with nukes themselves, right after North Korea is gone from the scene. Nobody in their right mind with a sense of history and a knowledge of cultures wants that for the Northeast Asian region. The only people who should have nukes in that part of the world is...Uncle Sam and Uncle Same alone.

Re #13

Actually China will die first. U.S.? we will see. In any event, the neighborhood may be no loner the same. It all depends on how long China would play game with N. Korea.

Hey china! Better start reigning in your little puppet. Japan, go nuclear anyway.

I agree, why would Japan want to spend the time and money to build their own, which God forbid might not work right anyway, when they can just by some nuke-tipped missiles from us?

Taiwan should also go nuclear. If we got somone like Hitlery Klintoon, Taiwan will still be safe. China surrounded by nuclear powers would also, as you said, crash down their regional hegemony.

Sorry, but I don't trust Japan any further than I could throw them. Certainly not with Nuclear weapons. They are still very agressive people in many ways, and if we allow them nukes, we may be on the recieving end one day.

Because the Japanese-built missiles will be cheaper, sportier, get better gas mileage and have a longer warranty than the American missiles. ;-)

It's widely suspected that Japan could have nukes within six months of making the decision to go ahead and build them. They already know how, all it takes is the political will. As for Taiwan, there have been rumors floating around for years that they already have them(supposedly, they got together with fellow international outcasts Israel and apartheid South Africa and built them in the 70s and 80s).
