"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" scored $50 million in first-day receipts at 3,661 theaters across the nation on Thursday, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations said Friday. The take handily beats the one-day record of $44.8 million set last year by "Shrek 2." "Sith" is distributed by News Corp.'s (NWS) 20th Century Fox film unit.
That was the original vision by Lucas.
Episodes 4, 5 and 6 were to be Empire overcome by the Rebellion.
Episodes 1, 2 and 3 were to be the formation and early days of the Empire.
Episodes 7, 8 and 9 were to be the further adventures of Luke and his buddies with the backdrop of the attempted re-rise of the Empire.
"I love Kung Fu..."
The Nazis had flair they made the Jews wear...
Due to Lucas's distribution deal, it's actually almost all money in Lucas's pocket.
Which is how it was paid for in the fist place. Since EMPIRE all of the STAR WARS movies have been self-financed.
"It is the best movie I have ever seen, EVER!!!"
Personally, I thought that last Elvis movie on CBS belongs to the ages.
Fox doesn't have their logo on it for fun. They laid down some money to get that and will be getting plenty more money back.
That statement pretty much sums it up. I'll go see the movie, but the one thing that bugs me (and a lot of my friends and acquaintances) is that the movies are so unforgettable. Quick--what happened in the last movie? Heck, I can't even remember if I'm supposed to know that Darth Vader is Luke's father (or is it the other way around?). Anyway, I'm there for the special effects on the big screen. The plot is negligible at this point.
Saw it, loved it.
There's 1 clunker line, but about 25 awesome ones. By *far* the best prequel, better than ROTJ. Hard to say, but it's up there with ESB and ANH.
I knew it! (smile)
Well, not exactly always, but more than I would have guessed. Of the top 30 grossers, I see 8 that I'd call kids' films.
1 Titanic (1997)
2 Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
3 Shrek 2 (2004)
4 E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
5 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
6 Spider-Man (2002)
7 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
8 Spider-Man 2 (2004)
9 The Passion of the Christ (2004)
10 Jurassic Park (1993)
11 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
12 Finding Nemo (2003)
13 Forrest Gump (1994)
14 The Lion King (1994)
15 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
16 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
17 Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
18 Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
19 Independence Day (1996)
20 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
21 The Sixth Sense (1999)
22 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
23 Home Alone (1990)
24 The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
25 Meet the Fockers (2004)
26 Shrek (2001)
27 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
28 Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
29 Jaws (1975)
30 The Incredibles (2004)
I believe Al Capone experienced revenge of the "Siph". Sith must really be something.
"When the best performance in a movie is turned in by a CGI (Yoda), you know the film is in deep trouble."
You mean like Gollum too, right?
I'll go see the movie, but the one thing that bugs me (and a lot of my friends and acquaintances) is that the movies are so unforgettable.
I think you meant "so forgettable", but I take your point!
It ws no more marginal of a plot than any of the first three movies.
In some ways, maybe better. It's STAR WARS, not Felini or David Lean.
As for Portman, she has turned in decent performances in CLOSER and GARDEN STATE. It's more likely the script and the directing. And the fact that she apparently was feuding with Lucas.
Whoever told Hayden Christensen he could act needs to be publicly pilloried.
Likewise, Christiansen has turnedf in creditable performance in other flicks, like LIFE AS A HOUSE. He was better here than in CLONES, I thought, if still a little wooden at times.
When the best performance in a movie is turned in by a CGI (Yoda), you know the film is in deep trouble.
Actually I thought Ian McDiarmid - as Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine - stole the movie. Once he was disformed he was too over-the-top - but before that's, he's superb. Clearly the best actor of the series.
In sum, REVENGE OF THE SITH is, at its best, as good as anything in EMPIRE or A NEW HOPE. People forget that many of the things they decry in the new movies were present in the original trilogy in some degree - trite dialogue, choppy scene cutaways, flat acting. Fortunately it also had brilliant characterizations in Ford/Solo and Fisher/Leia to overcome those weaknesses.
Thank you for that correction; yes, "forgettable".
Details?
"I wouldn't say I'm missing it, Bobs"
Can you suggest the order of watching all episodes? I droppred out after Return of the Jedi.
