For Immediate Release:
Nicole Krogman Scheduled to Appear on Hannity & Colmes Tonight
Student GOP Leader will Discuss Her Suspension from Wells College Three Weeks before Graduation
This has everything to do with my being an outspoken conservative leader on campus
Ithaca, NY May 19th, 2005:
Nicole Krogman, a resident of Newfield in Tompkins County, NY, is scheduled appear tonight on the leading national television show Hannity & Colmes to discuss her recent suspension by Wells College. The show airs from 9-10 PM EDT on Fox News Channel.
Krogman is the Co-Chairman of the Wells College Republicans and an editor of the Cornell American, a conservative publication at Cornell University. She is the most high-profile conservative student at Wells.
Earlier this month, and just three weeks shy of her scheduled graduation, Krogman was suspended by Wells. The school has ruled that not only would she be suspended for the remainder of the semester, but that Krogman would not be permitted to take incompletes in any of her classes, meaning that her entire grade would be based on less than a full semesters work, without being allowed to submit final papers or exams, making up a significant portion of the grade. This will likely result in Krogman failing at least two other courses. As a result of such failures, Krogman would be subject to academic suspension for a full year.
The suspension stems from charges of plagiarism that the school brought against Krogman one week after an article she wrote, critical of anti-Republican bias in some media, appeared in the school newspaper, The Onyx.
The article, which appeared shortly before the 2004 presidential election, focused on the Rathergate affair, in which CBS had relied on forged documents calling into question President Bushs military service.
The article was in fact a re-publication of an article written by Krogman and appearing under her byline in the Cornell American. Krogman has indicated that the manuscript submitted to The Onyx was fully footnoted.
Nevertheless, Krogman was ordered, as punishment, to undertake a non-credit independent study course in journalistic ethics under the supervision of Wells professor Linda Lohn. As recorded by Krogman in her notes of her one meeting with Lohn, she was given till the last day of classes, May 13th, to submit her assignment. But on April 5th Wells informed Krogman that she had only until April 12th to complete the assignment, and when she was unable to do so, suspended her as described above.
Mark Finkelstein of Ithaca has served as a legal advisor to Krogman in this matter.
Said Krogman: I honestly do believe that this has everything to do with my being the most outspoken conservative on campus. It is my deep conviction that a liberal or feminist campus leader would never have received the same treatment.

Hannity & Colmes ping to the Today Show ping list.
I didn't think there were any conservatives in Ithaca except Behind Liberal Lines....
...no such animal.
There are a few others in deep cover ;-)
I know. We're everywhere.... LOL!

So she plagiarized herself? How does the college know that she didn't give herself permission to use her work in the Onyx?
Wait a second, they're saying that she plagiarized herself? Whisky Tango Foxtrot!
How's this: one of the "judges" on the Wells court who convicted Nicole of "plagiarism" just before the 2004 election . . . was the Chair of the Wells College Democrats!
Wait, I'm confused. She was accused of plagiarizing her own work?
You beat me, LOL!
There was never any formal statement of charges or finding of facts, other than of "plagiarism." She was either found guilty of plagiarizing herself, or or using unattributed quotes in the article. But as stated in the release, Nicole submitted a fully-footnoted manuscript to the school paper.
You may find this absurd (and it is) but some schools don't let you cite yourself or reproduce your own work, even if footnoted.
Now granted, this was a newspaper, so it should be different, but when I went to college, I was warned about it when I did cite myself from a previous paper written in the same class.
The teacher (who was nice enough to let me know so I wouldn't get in trouble with any other professor) told me that some teachers will fail you for it, or if they find out that you used an assignment for more then one class or more then one time, will flunk you or have you brought up on charges of plagerizm or cheating.
Its stupid, and no, the good professor had no idea why it was a rule.
This is my alma mater.
When I attended, the student body was pretty evenly divided between rich preppy types and bohemian liberal types, but the bohemian types were BY FAR the most vocal.
The writing was on the wall for Wells more than 20 years ago. This doesn't surprise me in the least.
Regards,
Must make you sad to see this happen. This kind of publicity can't be good for Wells at a time they're trying to somewhat alter their image and going co-ed.
I was intrigued by your tagline: oderint dum metuant.
Not being a real student of Latin, I guessed it meant "dumb mutants smell." ;-)
But I looked it up and see it means "let them hate so long
as they fear," described as a favorite saying of Caligula
Well, the locals around Ithaca are conservative, but it's the college which dominates the town.
You're talking about attempting to use coursework more than once to obtain a grade. That's cheating and is an entirely different matter than that being discussed here; sounds like a political witch-hunt.
That actually makes some sense because in order to get credit for different classes, the work done in each class should be different.
However, as I understand it, the article by Ms. Krogman was not written as a class assignment. It was for the school newspaper, and different publications often print the same article.
Caligula... The Bill Clinton of Rome.
