Wearing red increases the chance of victory in sports, say British researchers who clearly do not follow the Cincinnati Reds.
"Across a range of sports, we find that wearing red is consistently associated with a higher probability of winning," Dr. Russell Hill and Dr. Robert Barton, researchers in evolutionary anthropology at the University of Durham, wrote in a paper that appears today in the journal Nature.
The research began a year ago with a hunch based on observations in the animal kingdom, where red coloration is often associated with male dominance, Dr. Barton said in an interview. Zebra finches fitted with red leg bands tend to become dominant, while those given blue bands are more submissive. In humans, anger reddens the face, which may send signals of fierceness.
The two researchers studied results of the 2004 Summer Olympics to eliminate the possibility of a home team advantage, and found that contestants in tae kwan do, boxing and wrestling were issued red or blue protective gear at random. "It's almost as if somebody had designed an experiment for us," Dr. Barton said.
Dr. Hill said the evidence of a beneficial effect had emerged, with combatants wearing red winning 6 out of 10 bouts in especially close matches. "Even we were surprised at how consistently the results have been coming out across the range of sports we have looked at," he said.
They have taken a preliminary look at soccer as well, and found that in the Euro 2004 international soccer tournament, the five teams that wore predominantly red shirts did better.

Where are the pink uniforms?
Time for the MSM to return to the red = dems standard on election maps.
LOL! That is exactly what I thought when I read this!
Did you guys draft for defense?
This finally validates my red underwear!
Don't get me started K.C.!....I hope the Raiders kick your rearendo!...(I go back as far as those Hank Stram/John Madden blood sport games)....
Unless you can pay $200,000,000 for pitchers like the Fawgin' Yankmees.
Reggie White of the Memphis Showboats:
Trust me, in real life the uniforms were pink-ish.
Wearing "Red" has done squat for the likes of the Washington Redskins, the Chicago Blackhawks and the KC Chiefs and IIRC the 49ers wear red too and they're not exactly a powerhouse of late. And the new Washington Nationals wear red and they suck.
In the animal world, the last I looked lions and hyenas aren't "red" and no other animal screws with either. Then we have the tiger, both Siberian and Bengal variety and they aren't "red". Then there's the BLACK Mamba and Anaconda and they aren't red., etc, etc, etc...
If I paid for this 'study' I want a refund. There's no cause and effect here. 'They' might as well have said that all athletes won, or the toughest animals were all born on days with with a 'y'.
Yep. Big time.
The Chiefs picked LB Derrick Johnson in the first round. He was a monster in college and looks like he will be one in the NFL.
They also picked up Pat Surtain (CB), Sammy Knight (S) and Kendrell Bell (LB) in free agency (they also picked up a good DE from Tennessee but I can't recall his name right now).
KC looks to be loaded for bear on D this year.
Ditto.
Man, that was football. Buck Buchanan, Ben Davidson, Marv Hubbard, Curly Culp, Willie Lanier, Art Shell, Bobby Bell--those guys didn't take any crap off of anyone.
If those games were played now, half the team and the coaches would be facing hefty fines.
I recall one game (sometime in the period 1969-1971) when the Chiefs and Raiders had a bench clearing brawl, baseball style. The field was littered with black and red players beating the crap out of each other. The network went to a commercial break, and when the break was over, the brawl was still going on.
I seem to remember the announcer using the word "pandemonium" a lot.
Nah, couldn't have been pink. ;-)
Nobody would wear them........ except maybe Barney Frank and Richard Simmons.
Have a look...........a huge pink socialist uniform.
;-)
They're a game out of first in the NL East, and 1.5 games out of the Wild Card spot. Suck, they do not.
I think the thrust of the study is "all else being equal, red helps". No talent can not be made up for by wearing red, but for two equal competitors (or close to equal) red may help.
That was football without the beer commercials......
I think it is hogwash too but I just thought of Oklahoma, Alabama, Nebraska, and USC, all have some shade of red.
You're right.
We could watch a game without being jolted out of our seats by a LOUD, annoying, LOUD, drunken orgy with scantliy clad bimbos LOUDLY promising their favors if we would only slam back their choice of beer.
