Md. cardinal to boycott Giuliani speech
5/18/2005, 11:11 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cardinal William Keeler will not attend a Jesuit university commencement because keynote speaker Rudolph Giuliani, a Catholic, supports abortion rights, an official said Wednesday.

Giuliani, the Republican former New York City mayor mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008, is expected to award some 1,600 degrees and certificates at Friday's commencement at Loyola College of Maryland.

He also is to receive an honorary degree.

Friday's graduating class entered the school one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said Loyola spokesman Mark Kelly.

"The attacks had a huge effect on this class, many of whom are from New York," Kelly said late Wednesday. "The college selected Mayor Giuliani because of his courage and leadership after the attacks."

Kelly added Loyola does not agree with every position held by every speaker.

Keeler could not be reached for comment Wednesday night. His spokesman did not elaborate on the decision, but confirmed it was because of Giuliani's abortion stance.

The Cardinal Newman Society is planning protests, the group said in a statement.

The society is protesting speakers and honorees at 18 Catholic college and universities, saying the invitations violate the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops statement last year asserting "Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles."

Earlier this week, New York Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, also a Catholic, canceled his speech to graduates of St. Elizabeth's College of Nursing after learning a bishop opposed his appearance. Boehlert said he did not want to draw attention from the graduation ceremony.

A spokeswoman for Giuliani did not immediately return phone calls.

"I think I'm returning to dust, and will "live" thereafter only a brief time in the memory of a few, before achieving total oblivion."

Then what was your purpose on this earth? What possible need is there for the Human being in the grand scheme of "mother nature"? This is another area where the 'evolution' theory fails. Mankind does not fit into the grand scheme. What was the cause and effect rational for green goo to randomly produce a male and female human? We aren't part of the food chain, except at the very top of it. We have a conciouness, we are aware. We don't have fur to keep us warm. We climed out of the goo pile completely defensless, unable to survive one night. Not knowing how to feed ourselves, or that we even had to, or what to eat. No, the human being didn't evolve from some lower lifeform, otherwize we would have developed defenses, fur, and long fangs to rip open the hides of our prey. We are unique, and completely at odds with the theory of how other animals evolved. Maybe God gave you a purpose to be here. The answer is in the bible. You should read it one day.

After he left, NYC was clean and very safe. I think murders dropped from 1600 per year to about 400.

Actually it was closer to 2,200 to about 600, which is even more dramatic.

Boycotting respected speakers because of their views on abortion laws who will not be speaking about abortion seems excessive. I think that approach will backfire.

Backfire, how? Our Church is not a political party. We're not concerned about membership rolls. Giuliani and the school are creating scandal, since both pretend they're Catholic. If this was John Kerry I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune.

Yes, but open and honest I would rather have, and that is Guiliani.

Republicans, the family bvalues party. I'm sure if he was Ted Kennedy you'd be singing a different tune.

guess nobody could speak at Catholic universities in France, or for that matter, much of Catholic Europe, where mistresses are common and accepted. I once had a French client who said he would not trust a politician who did not have a mistress.

Who really cares what the custom is over there? Just because everyone's doing it doesn't make it OK.

Boycotting respected speakers because of their views on abortion laws who will not be speaking about abortion seems excessive. Especially Rudy Guiliani.

Here comes Deacon Dissent. Why "especially" Rudy? Because he has an (R) after his name? You've never met a boycott you liked, looking sophisticated to the intelligentsia has always been a higher concern.

It has happened before, it will again.

I'm sure the Vatican will be glad to hear that.

Awesome!

Do it to them all, regardless of party.

Of course, that latter bit pleases me not for myself; I think I'm returning to dust,

Boy are you in for a surprise...and probably not the good kind.

You should give something more than backhanded sarcastic support to the American Church, which seems to be doing some encouraging things over the last month or so.

In this Age of the Value Voter, among Rudy's huge liabilities are his personal life. Rudy's love life reads like a sordid tale from an X-rated paperback romance novel.

Rudy was first married to his cousin for 14 years, dumping her when he met Donna Hanover, then had the 14-year marriage annulled telling the Church he didn't "realize" his first wife was his second cousin.

Yeah, sure Rudy. Mayor Rudy, while a married man and father of two, got involved with his third and present wife, escorting her publicly, and insisted his lover move into Gracie Mansion while he was still married to Donna.

Did we mention Rudy once endorsed a Democrat--Cuomo--over Pataki? And that Rudy looked the other way when his patronage appointee Russell Harding --Liberal Party's Ray Harding's son---was stealing $400,000 from the Housing Development Corp. and enjoying kiddie porn and gay vacations on the taxpayers dime?

In the Understatement of the Year, Sen Trent Lott recently warned that Guiliani's liberal views on abortion, civil unions and gay rights could make it "difficult" for him to win office as a Republican.

Trent forgot to add the Rudy would hunt down every gun, of every type, in every household in the USA and melt them down into scrap metal. Rudy doesn't need a gun. Like all rich liberals, he's got armed guards to protect him.

Perhaps Rudy ought to tell graduates how he plans to use failed HomeLandSec appointee Bernie Kerik's personal, business and political expertise to help him win public office (laughs uproariously).

Needs to be done because the bishops have spent too many years accepting the sophistry of the CUOMO "personally opposed "crowd.

I second that. Catholics, regardless of their nationality are Catholics first, citizens second, and members of a political organization third.

I'd rather put my faith and loyalty to God and Church. The Republicans by and large, are as phony a bunch of bastards as the Democrats. Giuliani I've found is one of the biggest self-aggrandizers out there.

Oh, you don't have to tell me. I live in the NYC metro area. Good mayor, probably an awful person, a hideous Catholic (really, a permanently excoummunicated Catholic since he's an adulterer).

Keeler told the three moms who were objecting to drop dead. Not likely that Keeler will re-visit that.

The moms are tough as nails and have not yet dropped dead, BTW.

I think being nice to Sinky is penance enough.

But, if you want penance, then you'll have to listen to the entire Ring Cycle, once-through continuously, WITHOUT eating or sleeping until it's over.

And threatened to cut off five-star dining privileges in the papal dining room during residency in Vatican City unless he agreed.

LOL! There must have been some pressure applied, perhaps in the comfy chair range ...

I have an extremely heterodox friend from Baltimore who explains all of her errors and profound ignorance of the Catholic Faith by announcing that she's a "Baltimore Catholic." Keeler seems to have created a special category over the years.

Still, this is good news. Rudy was an effective mayor on various levels, but he needs a good slap upside the head where his Catholicism is concerned.
