IMHO the English think of Americas as either white (English) or black (West Indian) so when we see Asian Americans that throws us. However with the advent of Satellite TV more and more American shows on UK TV I think that the perception is changing and now in particular people are realizing the high Hispanic population and the growing Muslim/Asian
