It used to be that way (even shorter periods of no activity would bump you offline) but dial-up ISP's have grown so much that they have tons of phone lines and aren't so much at a loss to get people connected, so more of them just let you stay on. I could actually stay online for as long as I want without being disconnected, but I do sign off. I set my phone dialing options so that if I get a call, the ring bumps me offline and I can answer the phone.
I had to shut down the PC and unplug everything. The storm was very close and packed quite a punch.

I like the squirrel/rat/hamster on the Dose, but squirrels in my backyard (with the help of birds) have ripped my outdoor furniture pads to shreds! Good thing I got them at K-Mart several years ago. I had no idea they would do this.
