Paroled Murderer in Tennessee Is Charged With Killing Again
By Bill Poovey Associated Press Writer Published: May 18, 2005
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Tony Pope went to prison for bludgeoning his girlfriend to death with an iron skillet and was back out on the streets five years later despite a warning from a friend of the victim. "It not only scares me to think that someone like this can go free, but it puzzles me as to why you'd release him to possibly do it again," Vicki McCurry wrote to Tennessee's parole board before a 2001 hearing.
The board did not listen. On a 4-0 vote, it released Pope after he had served one-third of his 15-year sentence.
"I'd give my right arm to change that vote," said Bill Dalton, one of seven gubernatorial appointees on the board.
Earlier this month, Pope was charged with killing his wife with a hammer; strangling his 13-year-old stepdaughter; and fatally dropped and punched his 5-week-old son. Investigators said Pope told them his wife was leaving him and taking the children.

Well, he appears to have anger management problems. You'd think the parole board would have guessed as much. Too bad. Now three more dead, two of them children.
Gee--he was only a few anger management classes away from being just fine. /sarcasm
Goes to show how well their risk assessment tests work! Wonder if they will change them now that they have been proved horribly wrong!
I'd give a lot to charge Bill Dalton and his "friends" as a accessory to murder...
Vigilante justice may be the only kind of justice we have in this country anymore.
Parole boards may be corrupted from time to time, no?
Our justice system is horrible. This monster should have been given the death sentence.
Excellent point. You wonder who sets priorities.
If you live in a society where no one has any responsibility for anything, statements like this make sense.
Another fine example of the effectiveness of "rehabilitation".
Its a shame that the touchy - feely parole board isn't in the next cell awaiting their trial for being accessories
I second that. It's time there was some accountability on these parole boards. They're letting too many molestors and murderers and other assorted vermin out on the streets before they've served their time. If they need extra room in the prisons, let out the folks who are in on non-violent offenses first.
Is that what they gave the Texas parole who just killed his daughter and her friend in Illinois? Gee, he only went to prison for chasing his wife around with a chain saw. sarcasm here also.
I know they have a difficult job, but imo for endangering the public by releasing a murderer in spite of warnings from those who know him, they should do some community service and/or jail time themselves.
To save money, Oregon legislature just floated an idea for cutting all violent criminals sentences by 1/3. Probably needed the money for a new state slogan.
They need to change the law. If a paroled killer , kills again.
Charge the persons voting for parole as accessory .
I agree. Violent offenders have sacrificed personal freedom for a long, long time. Murderers should be executed. Child molesters should be torturned, then executed, but a death sentence alone would help.
"Our justice system is horrible. This monster should have been given the death sentence."
I completely agree that our justice system is becoming a miserable failure. We are overprosecuting minor, needless, and pointless laws. Yet we are underprosecuting violent offenses.
Works for me
Execute them instead.
