HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A pit bull that had once bitten a person fatally mauled a young girl before being subdued by firefighters using a fire extinguisher, officials said.
The girl, who was 2 or 3 years old, was pronounced dead at a hospital following the attack Tuesday at the dog owner's home, police Sgt. Dan Underwood said. Her name was not released.
"The girl, her mother and at least two other people were apparently hanging out on the house's porch," Underwood said. "The homeowner apparently told them all to stay out of the house where the dog was."
It was not known what provoked the dog.
Huntington firefighter Jason Price said the dog was wild-eyed and the hair on the back of its neck was raised, and that it rammed the door like a bull.
"Hollywood couldn't have made this dog look more evil," he said.
The pit bull's owner, who also was not identified, had posted several "beware of dog" signs and was keeping the dog inside the house because it had previously bitten another person, said Debbie Young, office manager for Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Control.
"A lot of people are under the impression that once they put those warning signs, they are in the clear. ... They are responsible for that animal," Young said.
No charges have been filed, authorities said Wednesday.
Young said animal control officials will ask a judge to order that the dog be destroyed.

Another child dead, another dog euthanized because of a vicious owner's desire to make a good breed of canine into a monster...however, the owner in this case, did take some precaution to warn others about his 4-legged home security device.
If you've ever tried to obtain homeowner's insurance with a dog you may realize that dogs are fast becoming a rich person's pet. There is a long list now of what is considered "dangerous breeds" that require hefty riders on policies. The usual response to this profiling is to try and hide a dog's breed by saying a mix. This is often met with a series of questions about what kind of mix? As I said, I foresee the day when only people like John F'n Kerry will be able to afford having a dog.
No need to ask....two deaths later, the answer is obvious....put it down.....
Yep. Now where are all those stories of kids being killed by Lazo Apsos, Schnausers, Collies, black labs, yellow labs, golden retrievers... They must be around here somewhere.
What mother in her right mind would put a child in danger like this?
We once mauled a frisbee and a tennis ball!
Awww...Cute!
My brother and his wife have taken to breeding chocolate labs, and the one in this pic reminds me of his girl Brandy.
Very sweet.
Exactly. The dog should have been put down the first time and the owner should have been penalized, i.e. placed in Jail for some time. I like "pitbulls", it is just too bad many of them are owned by morons and thugs, and this is the result.
What kind of dog is the spotted one? Is that some kind of setter mix? It is cute. I am looking into getting another dog, because my Rottweiler/German Sheppard mix loves other dogs so much.
A friend of mine had a pitt bull she swore was safe.
The owner of the dog is responsible, AND the mother should be held accountable for negligence in her child's safety, imo.
For that matter, any adult who allowed the situation should be responsible, just as it is my responsibility to report child abuse or child neglect of any child.
Looks like a German Shorthaired Pointer. I had two growing up. Amazing breed. Great with kids.

Cool! Breeding chocolates exclusively takes a special pair of dogs. Of the 81 possible male/female lab combinations there are only 3 cases where all pups are always chocolate. This web page has why...

O.k. Thanks. I will have to do some research on the breed. I like the look of it though, and it is just the right size.
All dogs can be vicious dogs, just as all dogs can be socialized... Just take a gander at "Petey" the pitbull of "Little Rascals" fame, the dog on the "Target" ads, etc., etc., et al.
If my neighbor showed up with one of these things I wouldn't wait for an attack.
