What is wrong with our public school system? how can we fix this issue of discrimination?
The Atlantic Online? ^ | 2000 | Christina Hoff Sommers

I was wondering what everyone thought of this, I recently came across this article and found it extremely disturbing.

This discussed gender issues in Public Schools. Moreover, how boys in elementary schools are discriminated against. They are being wrongly "masculinized," this will render boys less competitive, more emotionally expressive, more nurturing more, in short the agenda is to raise boys to be more like girls. This is just one aspect of the article. What freaked me out was, "The performance gap between boys and girls in high school leads directly to the growing gap between male and female admissions to college. The Department of Education reports that in 1996 there were 8.4 million women but only 6.7 million men enrolled in college. It predicts that women will hold on to and increase their lead well into the next decade, and that by 2007 the numbers will be 9.2 million women and 6.9 million men."

How come it seems this is not being addressed? I think this would hurt many women to see what the school system is doing to their boys. can anything be done to prevent this? I am ordering the book and thanks for your time. Samantha (I am new to free republic)

Enroll your kids in private education or homeschooling. Public school systems get dollar allocations per student. Reduce the students in the system and they get reduced funding. Ain't competition great?

Just one more reason to homeschool or send your little curtain-climbers to private school.

What is wrong with our public school system?

In short?...it's run by the government.

Privatize it...get some competition going. Let the parents vote with their feet and their own tax monies. Then you will see all of this garbage, socializing, feel good, liberalism go away and kids being given an education that will serve them in the work force as adults again.

Just my opinion.

Private Schools are the only answer to this mess we call "Public Education". Without competition the public have no place to go but where every non competitive form of service has ever gone......... "Completely Useless"

The "girls rule, boys drool" ideology has been pushed by the liberals for decades. The only way to end this and a number of other problems is to go private. Public schools are being actively used to warp society - and they're ineffective as hell when it comes to educating. We have to end the public education disaster by figuring out a way to put school choice into the hands of parents.

Welcome to Free Republic. This is a good topic, but there were several problems in the way you posted your thread.

I call it the Government school system when talking to other people. We had to home school our last 2 kids after the 5th grade, because things where just too bad in the middle schools. They both turned out great compared to their friends and older sister who all went through all 12 years of government schooling.

We decided to homeschool when our first was in kindergarten. We've home schooled them all ever since. We wouldn't have it any other way.
We really, really love our kids. There's no way we'd throw them into the government lions den!

For some additional comments/thoughts from a post referencing this piece:

The sad truth is, IMHO, is it's a part of "Third Worlding" of America. Gramsci's "Long March Through the Institutions" seems to fit nicely with current events in education and elsewhere. Some links:

This is a no brainer, we don't have a public school system.
We have a indoctrination and disinformation center that is working just fine. That is if you are a liberal.

1. Pull your children of public indoctrination centers.

2. Return the money used for public education back to the taxpayers in the form of an Educational Tax Credit. Beware of school vouchers - they're another socialist wealth redistribution schemes, and it will only make matters worse.

That's my synopsis on how to solve this issue.

Oppose public education. Take it out of the hands of overpaid teachers and instructors who are mostly concerned with personal and social issues.

Have to brag some. My grandchildren are home schooled and doing fine. The oldest, my grandson, is 15 and is attending Jr. collage next semester. He should get his associates degree at about the same time he receives his home school diploma. My daughter majored in computer science and finished with a perfect 4.0 but she said he had surpassed some of her math skills so it was time to send him on.

''Discrimination''?

You'd be better advised to look at ''incompetence'' and ''agenda''.

It's quite paradoxical that someone who cannot, apparently, teach 3rd and 4th graders to read and do simple arithmetic, is simultaneously somehow competent to teach ''attitudes'', and/or whatever other PC kwapola is on the agenda. Not to mention the incredible notion, as practised, of ''sex education (sic)''.

Liberals ruin everything. I was watching the local news last night, and they ran a story about some area schools teaching cooperation courses. Students were being shown how to cooperate with other students in doing certain projects. This used to be considered offhand instruction which everyone implicitly understood. The school had to hire outside people to come in and set these bogus courses up.

I swear libs are trying to create a nation of emotional babies who can't fend for themselves. Human nature (boys like to be boys which means breaking things, running around like maniacs a good part of the time, and figuring out and doing many things by themselves) will inevitably trump libs ridiculous schemes to control male behavior. But they can do a lot of damage in the short run.

My kids went to parochial grade school. It's one of the best decisions my husband and I ever made.
