Per usual, I was looking for a map. I couldn't figure out why the city would have been used as any kind of base for use against Ireland. I would have to think Roman strongholds in southern Wales would be more condusive for that kind of thing. Anyway, found a site with a picture, though there's not much to see in it.

***The name probably derives from "castor" for camp, a military camp.***

Close....

"Five hundred years after the Legions withdrew from Deva, their Saxon successors knew the city as Legecaester, a translation of part of the British (Welsh) Caer Lleon Vawr ar Ddyfrdwy or 'Camp of the great Legion on the Dee'- also called Caerleon-ar-Dour. Long before the Norman conquest, the first part of the name was being omitted in documents, and by the time of Henry I (1100-1135) the coinage had also simplified it to a form which is recognisable as the modern Chester. Our Welsh-speaking neighbours however, to this day refer to the city as Caer."

Thanks--I saw a TV program this week on concrete (also on the History Channel) that spoke of this.

I wonder if they could at least spell "colosseum" correctly back then?

He said: “It obviously means that Chester was a very important place but why, we don’t know.” Very interesting.

Did they have teeny-tiny horse races there with teeny-tiny chariots?

Did The Spaniard ever have to fight on his knees there?

Pretty neat blam. I have seen the coliseum at Arles, it is still used for events. There was nothing going on there when we were there but I remember there were posters of coming events. I think that is fantastic, Arles is a fascinating city. We stayed at a hotel very near the coliseum that had been a convent.
