ABC correspondent Emma Griffiths reports.

ANNIE WHITE: Authorities in Uzbekistan have sealed off part of the eastern city of Andijon, where troops fired on a crowd of demonstrators killing as many as 500 people. Thousands of Uzbeks are now trying to leave the country, massing on the neighbouring Kyrgyzstan border.

The Uzbekistan Government claims to have the situation under control, but some observers are predicting more widespread instability in the former Soviet state. There are also calls for the United States to rein in its central Asian ally.

ABC correspondent Emma Griffiths reports.

EMMA GRIFFITHS: The border town of Korasuv was the first stop for Uzbeks wanting to flee their country and the violence that broke out on Friday.

VOX POP (translated): We've not had democracy in 12 years and there's no democracy in Uzbekistan now either. There's no freedom of speech. We were taken in, arrested at every possible time of the day....

EMMA GRIFFITHS: They're leaving in the wake of a violent military crackdown. It began with days of peaceful protest against the trial of several businessmen on terror charges.

(snip)

RICHARD BOUCHER: We're very concerned about the outbreak of violence in Andijan, in particular the escape of prisoners, including possibly members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan – an organisation we consider a terrorist organisation.

As we all know, Uzbekistan has been a somewhat "interesting" place lately. Every day the cat brings in something new here.

" There are also calls for the United States to rein in its central Asian ally."

I wonder if the "Violent Military Crackdown" resembles our own against a similar foe (think muj).

If the "protestors" are militant Islamic sympathizers, mow 'em down. U.S. intervention? Sure - we'll send more bullets.
