I'm not sure what you mean by driving insurance down would reduce the numbers covered.....

Anyway, if a company wants to attrack the best employees they will up the pay if they eliminate the benefit. To many people don't consider their benefits as compensation, they consider them entitlements. At least then employees would have ownership in their benefit selection and an interest in tayloring it to their needs. The costs would then reflect their choices.

ROFL!!!!!

That twisted type logic is exactly the kind used by those going after smokers (and whoever is next).

The other day some pharmaceutical flack stated (as if it were fact) "Smoking causes 30% of all cancer."

So taking his "fact" to it's logical conclusion, he is clearly stating that NOT smoking causes 70% of cancers.

Smoking, the clear solution to all our problems. It is the perfect fix for high health care costs, it is the future solution to the SS problems and it prevents nannies from entering your personal space!

Save the world, start smoking!

Respecting the NOW insured my speculation that if the company took that benefit the insurance companies would want to attract them. Because many would not be able to afford the premiums the insurance companies would be forced to lower their rates.

I think the people who believe they are entitled to anything are those NOT receiving the benefits. I personally educated myself and obtained the experience I needed to look for the job that had benefits. Those who did not make the choice for benefits seem to me to be the ones complaining NOW (many years later). Why would that be? I did nothing wrong why should I be belittled now or my benefits taken away.

Is there really any loyalty left in the market? The attitude in our society seems to be turning us against each other. So I guess the moral of the story is no decision is the wrong one because someone will save me later?

I'm not sure what you are advocating. You and I are on the same side with the cost of coverage decreases if the market were to actually be the driving factor. Yet you seem to be supporting the status quo situation that is causing the prices to climb.

In reality, you have earned your total compensation. If your pay would be increased you could purchase health coverage. If someone chose not to, then they should be held accountable for the cost of any care they need.

I would resent them driving, skiing, riding a motorcycle, over-eating, climbing mountains, playing any kind of sports, BBQing, blah, blah, blah. Life is full of risks and people get sick and need care, they get injured and need care. I know so many people who have cancer or died of cancer and so few of them smoked...and those I've known who did smoke had small-cell lung cancer and were dead in months, thereby saving lots of bucks.

Nope, Randall.  Thanks for thinking of me.  I only see you, Gabz and CSM.  You are the only to think of me.  Most of the names on this thread are unfamiliar to me.

Thanks again, Randall!

ALL the big wigs at my place smoke.

That means there is abundant hope for some vertical mobility in the organization.

I'm not just talking about smoking. Workers Compensation will deny benefits if you are drunk on the job. What about heroin addicts? Do we have to pay for their care too? Crack, Meth, etc. At what point do people have to be responsible for their own health?

Exactly! Where does it end?  Pretty soon, there won't be anyone fit to work if this trend continues with employers.  Life is a risk.  Even going to work is a risk.  Where will it end?  This needs to be nipped in the bud and quickly.
