NEW YORK A trial balloon for a Cheney for President run in 2008 is being launched by a surprising source, Washington Post star reporter (and White House insider) Bob Woodward.
Some critics claim that Dick Cheney has already been president for five years, so why should he go to the trouble of seeking the office (again) in 2008? But Woodward, appearing on Chris Matthews' NBC talk show on Sunday, labeled Vice President Cheney a serious dark horse candidate. He said that with "a number of people" going for the GOP nomination, a guy named George Bush might come out and say What about Dick?"
Woodward observed that "there's a serious vacuum right now," with Senators Frist, Brownback, and Allen leading the field, some say.
There may be a precedent for this. Cheney worked behind the scenes to gain the VP nod in 2000 -- put in charge of finding a suitable candidate he ended up suggesting himself.
Excellent post. I'm shamed I didn't think of this before.
Nice thought, but absolutely unconstitutional. Pres and VP must be citizens of (read: reside in) different states. Remember, the 'Rats tried this shtick on Cheney in '00 -- claimed he was a Texan like Bush. Fortunately, he had little or no difficulty in demonstrating he was a Wyomian (Wyomingite? Anyway, a person from Wyoming...).
Which would mean that Lynn Cheney would have no problem proving she was a Texan, but it's not going to happen.
Brownback? This is the first time I've seen his name mentioned as a serious contender. I don't know much about him, though my understanding is that he's a solid conservative.
I'd be interested to get FReepers thoughts on two issues:
1. Is he indeed a strong conservative and what can you say about his record and personality?; and
2. Do you see him as a potentially strong contender for the nomination?
I was under the impression that Lynne and Dick grew up and were highschool sweethearts in Wyoming. Not so?
I would relish seeing the 3 presidential debates for 08 with VP Cheney and uh, you know, uhmmm, the uh smartest uhmmmm you know uh woman uhmmmm in you know uh the uh uhmmmm world.
Well, he cannot replace Cheney in 2007 without Cheney's consent, as the v.p. is really elected and not appointed.
That's right, Cheney did NOT suggest himself, as I recall reading. It was GWB who decided that Cheney was superior to the choices over which Cheney was toying for recommendation.
Allen is another contender I'd like to learn more about. What do you like about him?
He wants to retire, spend time with the money, maybe, just maybem, do some stuff in the private sector and mostly hunt and fish.
He was perfectly happy in the private sector before he got involved with the Bush campaign, and after 8 years, he's going to look to get out of the political world and just sit back and relax.
Conservatives do retire, and are not as obsessed with power and politics the way liberals are.
Democrats don't retire, they either get voted out or die in office.
Or try to maintain influence in the political realm.
I'll explain when I get back from the store, my brother is calling me now to go to the store now.
IMHO, Bill Frist has not given us a great deal to be hopeful about his abilities. The filibuster ordeal has been going on with a GOP majority for two years, it should have been over a long time ago. Frist is a nice guy and he's certainly intelligent, but what has he accomplished as majority leader? The other big problem is Hospital Corporation of America. They were investigated a few years back for overbilling Medicare and Medicaid, they paid a huge fine and the CEO was forced out. If Frist is on the GOP ticket that all comes out again and it could get bad.
Sam Brownback sounds good, but he has ZERO name recognition.
Ooops, you're right.....oh, well......how Cheney and Rice? Lynn Cheney and Condi Rice?
Thanks for the info and comments.
Of all the possible GOP candidates, Cheney is the only one who, as of today, could beat ANY DEMONcrat that is put up for election. Until one of the other candidates proves himself, Cheny should be considered the leading candidate.
They did but they were living in Texas when Cheney ran Halliburton. I'm fairly certain they kept their home in Houston, if not they could surely buy a new one. In any case, it doesn't matter. Cheney doesn't want the job, he doesn't have an ego that tells him he needs to be president, and with his heart condition, his family would probably throw a fit.
