While GOP dithers, (Hillary) Clinton tackles immigration threat
Providence Journal ^ | 5/15/05 | Froma Harrop

HILLARY GETS IT. Hillary Clinton says she's against illegal immigration. And she would fine employers who hire illegal aliens.

Pundits say the New York Democrat is using this hot-button issue to position herself for the 2008 presidential election. It's a way to hit Republicans from the right. Polls show huge majorities of both Republicans and Democrats oppose illegal immigration -- and are frustrated that President Bush won't do a thing to stop it.

But this issue does not belong to the right. Or it shouldn't. Illegal immigration hurts most liberal causes. It depresses wages, crushes unions and kills all hope for universal health coverage. Progressives have to understand that there's little social justice in an unregulated labor market.

"Liberals are so confused on this issue," says Vernon Briggs, a labor economist at Cornell University and self-described liberal. "Immigration policy has got to be held accountable for its economic consequences."

Many Democrats used to get it. In 1964, President Johnson abolished the Bracero program, which brought in "temporary" farm workers from Mexico. Its demise let Cesar Chavez organize U.S. farm workers. His union won some battles early on, but a new wave of illegal immigrants in the mid-1970s reversed that progress. The union barely exists today.

Nowadays, the messages aren't even mixed anymore. A cheap-labor Republican, George Bush won't enforce the employer penalties. He has a new amnesty program. And he vows to "match any willing worker with any willing employer." Hence, the latest stampede at the southern border.

Sounds like the Democrats have an issue. And if Clinton can seriously address the problem in non-racial terms, she could march straight to the White House. Go for it, Hillary.

Thanks for the kind words.

There are a lot of people who assume that their hatred of the Clintons is universal. Not so. Not so at all. And they should remember that hatred backfires with the American people. Talk about "Klintoon" or "Shrub" is not the language of winners.

The Clintons have a way of fitting in anywhere. They can be mandarins among mandarins and good ole boys among good ole boys. This newfound mutual admiration society between Bill and Bush I attests to that.

Hillary is doing nothing for conservatives. However, the Bush family is going all out to see that she will be elected in 2008. Whoever runs on the Republican ticket will be a sacrificial lamb.

Let me spell it out for you. Politicians say things they do not mean, do not believe in, and will not follow through on. What they say is designed to sway the voter, and it works. What they do or do not do in office is quite different.

The U.S. has open borders and is moving rapidly toward 3rd world socialism, which better serves the power and money lust of the oligarchy.

"And especially since Fox's ethnic crack gives liberals cover to oppose illegal immigration without seeming "racist"."

His recent comment was a gift to Hillary. As the recent Zogby poll indicates, African-Americans are very anti-illegal. You should hear Maxine Waters (D-CA) on the issue. She's to the right of Pat Buchanan in her rhetoric. And those sentiments are being driven by the huge impact that illegal immigration has had upon inner city neighborhoods.

Border security has the potential to rally the African-American base to Hillary's side in 2008 like nothing else. Any inroads by the GOP on gay marriage will long be forgotten. They'll be tripping over themselves to vote (or voting a few times, even better) in North Miami and West Philadelphia.

She would hand the keys to the White House to Bin laden.

So, who do we vote for? Bush is handing the keys to our treasury to the illegals.

My vote has to be earned. It isn't owed to anyone.

That's your own personal thing. Ask how many really care who your vote goes to, okay?

Blind, canine obedience is not an attractive trait in humans. The sovereignty, security, and prosperity of this nation is more important than ANY party.

Has this group ever started any legislation to secure the borders and if they have, they should make a big deal about it against republicans and democrats.

The New Yrok GOP is the weakest state party in the country. They cannoyt "do" anything about it. What they should do is stand on principle. pataki will lose, and then soon the whole state will be Dems. The reason that the state partyis full f RINOS is the simple truth that no other form of Republican stands a chance of getting elected.

Again, your vote is yours. I don't care how you use it. I'm sure many others here don't care, either. Okay?

Good morning, Calpernia!

Hillary knows there's no money to be made by arresting and deporting illegals. Those who employ them (even if unwittingly) are target$. Illegals are potential constituents, perhaps donors to her campaigns. Pardon me.

"Henious Hillary Klinton vs Hanoi (The John) Kerry."

Sounds like a matchup for a Pay per View-WWE event.

Is your vote worth more then his, or mine? Your mindset is an example of the kind of thinking that is going to destroy the GOP.

Hillary running for president would at least get her out of NY but could turn into a disaster for the country if she's elected. Unfortunately she has a good chance of winning if the GOP passes more amnesties and does nothing about the borders.

Yes, Bush is doing what Reagan did with the illegal immigration issue. Would you rather have Mondale or Carter for president than Reagan?

Flashback to 1992: vote for Clinton "the moderate" or Perot, but not Bush Sr!

And just look what 8 years of a Clinton presidency did:

3,000 dead and the destruction of the World Trade Center.

She can't be held any more accountable than her husband was. She is on the offensive and Bush is so lousy and dunderheaded on this issue he leaves her a lot of opportunity.

On illegal immigration, there has been a disconnect between the black people and black leaders.

Maxine Waters used to support amnesty and pro-illegals policies out of a deranged multiracialism. Like Jesse Jackson yesterday practically trying to make excuses for Fox. Black leaders had this fantasy of a Rainbow Coalition between Blacks and Hispanics with Blacks playing the Jews. But Black masses who suffered from economic competition with illegal immigrants deeply resented it.

Apparently, Maxine, with her ear to the ground, is junking a non-existent Rainbow Coalition and listening to the socio economic interests of her voters.

But frankly, Blacks always remembered the 90s as the best of times. There is a very strong bond of affection between Blacks and the Clintons. Massive Black support will guarantee the nomination for Hillary and the GOP gains due to sodomite marriage will be history. You are right. The GOP gains were entirely due to religious blacks not feeling comfortable about a secularist latte liberal whom they really hadn't supported in the primaries (in 2004 black support in the Democratic nomination process was an afterthought instead of being the driving force it usually is. It was the white Deaniacs and MoveOn types who drove the 2004 Dem nomination process.).

If our party, the GOP, continues to be on the wrong side of the illegal immigration issue, we need to start thinking about what the '07 - '10 judicial nominations are going to look like.

There is far more at stake here than illegal aliens. The GOP's continuing support of this, against all logic, is going to prove incredibly costly in the coming years. This has the potential of actually allowing the Dims, as a party, to get back up off of the floor, and resurrect itself as a viable political force.

The GOP continues to ignore this at it's, and the nation's, peril.
