While GOP dithers, (Hillary) Clinton tackles immigration threat
Providence Journal ^ | 5/15/05 | Froma Harrop

HILLARY GETS IT. Hillary Clinton says she's against illegal immigration. And she would fine employers who hire illegal aliens.

Pundits say the New York Democrat is using this hot-button issue to position herself for the 2008 presidential election. It's a way to hit Republicans from the right. Polls show huge majorities of both Republicans and Democrats oppose illegal immigration -- and are frustrated that President Bush won't do a thing to stop it.

But this issue does not belong to the right. Or it shouldn't. Illegal immigration hurts most liberal causes. It depresses wages, crushes unions and kills all hope for universal health coverage. Progressives have to understand that there's little social justice in an unregulated labor market.

"Liberals are so confused on this issue," says Vernon Briggs, a labor economist at Cornell University and self-described liberal. "Immigration policy has got to be held accountable for its economic consequences."

Many Democrats used to get it. In 1964, President Johnson abolished the Bracero program, which brought in "temporary" farm workers from Mexico. Its demise let Cesar Chavez organize U.S. farm workers. His union won some battles early on, but a new wave of illegal immigrants in the mid-1970s reversed that progress. The union barely exists today.

cut

Nowadays, the messages aren't even mixed anymore. A cheap-labor Republican, George Bush won't enforce the employer penalties. He has a new amnesty program. And he vows to "match any willing worker with any willing employer." Hence, the latest stampede at the southern border.

Sounds like the Democrats have an issue. And if Clinton can seriously address the problem in non-racial terms, she could march straight to the White House. Go for it, Hillary.

Don't worry, she will lose by 3.5M votes as well. The battle lines are drawn. We outnumber them.

When the issue is cultural values, Democrats lose. When the issue is economic populism, Democrats win because they are very, very good at presenting themselves as the party that will protect Joe Sixpack from "fat cat special interests". Like the free trade open borders types.

Religious conservatives are a lot of Joe Sixpacks who have blue collar economic interests. Their parents and grandparents were New Deal Democrats and their great grandparents were William Jennings Bryan Populists. If Hillary can convince them that she respects red state values and mores (she did after all live in the Arkansas governor's mansion) and won't pack the judiciary with sodomite loving activists they will listen to what she has to say.

Folks the Democrats are moving to the right on immigration. The GOP and Bush are very vulnerable on this issue. I do not for one minute think that Hillary and the opposition care about the border one iota except as a political issue. But this not about reality it is about perception. If the public believes the Democrats care more about border security than the GOP then that will go along way into getting Hillary to the presidency in 08. We have to hold the GOP and its Representatives accountable on this issue.

Hillary needs to weigh in on this battle right now:

Baldwin Park public artwork angers group opposed to illegal immigration

Take a look at some of the photo's from this rally. The illegal aliens supporters were from ANSWER, the socialists, Maldef, Brown Berets, you name it, they were there. They hit an old woman in the head with a water bottle and she is in serious condition.

The woman had been down on the border with the minutemen just recently....

If you will look just under the Traffic light to the right of the Policeman's helmut you will see a poster that says.....F**K the Alamo!!!!!

Hillary Knows Illegals....

Chattanooga Grand Jury Indicts Tyson Foods

A Federal Grand Jury in Chattanooga has returned indictments against Tyson Foods, Inc., and six of its managerial personnel on charges involving illegal aliens.

Charged with conspiracy to violate, and violation of, various immigration laws prohibiting the importation and transportation of illegal aliens, and the use of fraudulent identification documents in the hiring of those illegal aliens are:

Tyson Foods, Inc., headquartered in Springdale, Arkansas

Robert Hash, a Vice-President at headquarters over the Retail Fresh Division

Gerald Lankford, former Human Resources Manager in the Retail Fresh Division

Keith Snyder, Complex Manager at the Tyson Plant in Noel, Missouri

Truley Ponder, former Complex Manager at the Tyson Plant in Shelbyville, Tennessee

Spencer Mabe, former Plant Manager at the Tyson Plant in Shelbyville, Tennessee

Jimmy Rowland, former Complex Personnel Manager at the Tyson Plant in Shelbyville, Tennessee

Tyson Foods is currently on criminal probation as a result of the corporation pleading guilty to bribery of former Secretary of Agriculture Espy, a felony, on December 29, 1997, a prosecution mounted by Independent Counsel Donald Smaltz, in federal court in Washington, D.C.

All defendants are charged in 36 counts of the 57-page federal indictment returned in Chattanooga on December 11. Tyson Foods and the six managers are accused in the indictment of conspiring to cause the importation and transportation of illegal alien workers from the Southern border of the United States to work at Tyson plants throughout the United States. The indictment charges that the defendants at Tyson Foods cultivated a "corporate culture in which the hiring of illegal alien workers . . . was condoned by Tyson management because it was more important for Tyson to meet its production goals and to cut its costs to maximize Tyson profits than for the defendants to comply with the immigration and other laws of the United States." According to the indictment, the defendants requested the delivery of illegal aliens to work at Tyson plants and aided and abetted them in obtaining false documents so that they could work at Tyson poultry processing plants "under the false pretense of being legally employable."

Tyson Foods and the six managerial defendants are further charged with conspiracy to obstruct the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in the enforcement of immigration laws, along with numerous substantive violations of those laws associated with the undercover deliveries of illegal aliens to various Tyson chicken processing plants. Notably, the charges of importing illegal aliens into the United States for commercial advantage implicate a statutorily imposed five-year mandatory minimum sentence, without the opportunity for probation or parole. In addition, the indictment seeks forfeiture of the financial gain realized by Tyson Foods and its managers as a result of the violations charged.

The United States Attorney's office praised the two-and-one-half-year undercover investigation conducted by the INS which provided the basis for the charges contained in the indictment. The investigation of the case was carried out by a task force composed of INS agents from around the country under the supervision of Al Garcia, Supervisory Special Agent, Task Force Coordinator, U.S. Border Patrol, San Angelo, Texas; and Tina Tucker, Supervisory Special Agent, Asset Forfeiture Coordinator, Dallas, Texas. The United States Attorney's office expressed appreciation to Robert Wallis, Regional Director, Central Region, INS, Dallas, Texas; James Cole, Associate Regional Director, Central Region, INS; Paul M. Berg, Chief Patrol Agent, U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio, Texas; Anne M. Estrada, District Director, INS, Dallas, Texas; and J. Scott Blackman, Regional Director, Eastern Region, INS, Burlington, Vermont.

The Task Force also included agents of the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and local law enforcement in the Shelbyville, Tennessee area.

According to the United States Attorney's office, "This prosecution signals a new approach to enforcing our immigration laws through targeting the corporations and their executives who recruit and exploit illegal alien labor. We believe that this approach affords a strong deterrent to violation of the immigration laws of this country."

The cases arising out of the nationwide investigation of Tyson Foods' hiring practices are being prosecuted by several Assistant United States Attorneys around the country, who have served on the task force under the coordination of the lead prosecutor, Assistant United States John P. MacCoon, Chattanooga, Tennessee, who may be contacted for further public information at (423)752-5140. Trial Attorney Stephanie Thacker of the Criminal Division, Department of Justice, Child Exploitation Section, serves as co-counsel, along with Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew T. Morris and Tammy Owens Combs of the United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Tennessee.

>>>>long-standing financial ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton. When the Tyson family appeared in court they were accompanied by James Blair, Tyson's corporate counsel and a close friend of the Clintons who "advised" Hillary Clinton in 1978 on commodities trades that earned her $100,000.<<<<

Wal-Mart Pays for Hiring Illegal Aliens
An investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement uncovered that contractors providing cleaning services to Wal-Mart hired illegal aliens for the job. The investigation ended March 18 with a landmark $11 million civil settlement. In addition, 12 corporations that provided contract janitorial services to Wal-Mart stores have agreed to forfeit an additional $4 million to the United States and have agreed to enter corporate guilty pleas to criminal immigration charges.

Announced by Assistant Secretary Michael Garcia, the $11 million civil settlement and the $4 million criminal forfeiture constitute the two most significant enforcement actions in the field of immigration employment sanctions since the laws were first enacted in 1986. The $11 million civil settlement alone is approximately four times larger than any other single payment received by the government in an illegal alien employment case.

“This case breaks new ground not only because this is a record dollar amount for a civil immigration settlement, but because this settlement requires Wal-Mart to create an internal program to ensure future compliance with immigration laws by Wal-Mart contractors and by Wal-Mart itself,” said Assistant Secretary Garcia. “ICE is committed to not only bringing charges against companies that violate our nation's immigration laws, but also working with them to ensure that they have programs in place to prevent future violations."

The case was a nationwide investigation into alleged employment of illegal aliens by cleaning companies that provided contract services to Wal-Mart. It was conducted by ICE, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, with the assistance of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and the Honesdale, Pa., Police Department.

The investigation evolved out of two prior immigration operations that began in 1998 and 2001, respectively. These operations targeted cleaning contractors that were hiring unauthorized workers from Eastern Europe.

The follow-up investigation culminated on October 23, 2003, with a series of immigration enforcement actions at some 60 Wal-Mart stores in 21 states. In these actions, ICE agents arrested approximately 245 illegal aliens employed by cleaning contractors and put these individuals into deportation proceedings.

Immediately following these enforcement actions, officials at Wal-Mart contacted federal authorities and pledged cooperation in the investigation into the employment practices of its cleaning contractors. Wal-Mart also renewed its commitment to ensure full compliance with federal immigration laws. The corporate commitment by Wal-Mart led to the discussions that resulted in the civil settlement.

Under the terms of this civil settlement, Wal-Mart has agreed to the entry of a consent decree that:

Directs Wal-Mart to make a payment of $11 million through the United States Attorney’s Office;
Permanently enjoins Wal-Mart from knowingly hiring, recruiting and continuing to employ unauthorized aliens workers; Directs Wal-Mart to establish a means to verify that independent contractors are also taking reasonable steps to comply with immigration laws;
Directs Wal-Mart to provide, over the next 18 months, all of its store managers and future store managers with training regarding immigration employment laws while complying with pertinent anti-discrimination laws;
Directs Wal-Mart to maintain its own pre-existing program of taking reasonable steps to ensure that Wal-Mart employees are authorized to work in the United States, while complying with pertinent anti-discrimination laws; Directs Wal-Mart to continue cooperation in the investigation of the alleged illegal employment.

YEP i'm "willing to listen" BUT NOT believe.

imVho, "the blond witch project" has about the same chance as i do to ever be elected POTUS. about 45% of the electorate HATES HER GUTS. (trust me, even i can find another 6% of the electorate that will vote for a GOP candidate, no matter which one runs!)

if Guiliani runs in '06 she MAY lose her seat at the senate too. that would FOR SURE finish her "political career".
