ANDERSON, S.C. May 12, 2005 A gunshot was fired into the floor in an Anderson County middle school after a student accidentally pulled the trigger of a deputy's holstered gun.
The gun fired Wednesday morning after a student grabbed it as the deputy told them how hard it was to take a gun from an officer's holster, Sheriff David Crenshaw said.
The student's finger apparently was small enough to get inside the holster and pull the trigger, the sheriff said.
The bullet fired into the floor, and debris cut and scratched two students. But no one was seriously injured, school officials said.
The sheriff's office has begun an internal investigation and the officer involved is on administrative leave, said Crenshaw, who would not identify the deputy or say whether he would be paid while on leave.
"The officer there today had a major lapse in judgment," Crenshaw said Wednesday. "He was just trying to be nice to the kids and made a faulty decision. It was an accident. The good Lord blessed us that nobody got hurt."

I guess now we will have to make police holsters child proof.
Must have been a glock!
No, just idiot proof.
Read the second paragraph, Hugin.
Those are commonly called "snap-caps" and they're not for loading/unloading.
They're designed for "dry-firing", i.e., practicing a draw from holster/point at predetermined spot/pull trigger.
They're designed to provide the proper resistance for the firing pin to keep from overstressing the firing pin spring.
What the hell are you suggesting, ktvaughn?
They do make dummy rounds but this was caused by another kind of dummy.
Didn't this same sort of foolishness occur just a month or two ago? Police officer instructing kiddies in gun safety.. whoops... didn't know it was loaded.
Only cops should have guns......
moi?
"The student's finger apparently was small enough to get inside the holster and pull the trigger"
Finger bang
An article on the same story previously posted stated explicitly that he told the kid to try to take the gun out of his holster.
LOL,
that is a GREAT show!
Well... see the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms form: ATF F 4473, and reference question "f".
Go ahead- play the well frogged opossum, it is fitting with your replies, so far.
I'm not an LEO, but this cop was a jack-ass having his weapon loaded conducting a class or seminar. The cops I know have conducted these classes, and they do not have a loaded weapon in the room. Furthermore, when they teach the students, they ALWAYS release the cylinder, or open the slide, and have a fellow officer confirm that all is clear.
When I transport my weapons, the first thing I do is confirm that all actions are open (in the car) before I approach towards the range.
One time when I was in college,30 years ago, some jack-ass had two live rounds in his Browning sbs.
What is it with some cops doing their "tough guy" bragging BS? If I were his boss, he'd be fired (no pun intended).
Oh! I spoke a frenchy word! I must be one a them commie libs!
You sound really angry. You should relax, it was a joke.
"What the hell are you suggesting, ktvaughn?"
And since you don't know me, why don't you watch YOUR french??
A bullet by itself may be less lethal than a spit-ball. There are four+ process pieces involved in the delivery process. I have a thirty-five year old Speer reloading manual that I can send to you. Then again, there are web sites: Dillon Precision, RCBS, Leeman...
He needs a new job at Handgun Control. None of them should be allowed within a hundred yards of a gun either.
