Should America Build A Holocaust Memorial for the 100 Million Victims of Communism?
May 13, 2005 | ComtedeMaistre

Some conservatives were angered by President Bush's decision to attend the military parade in Russia, where the Red Army was honored for its role in World War Two sixty years ago. The Red Army has a record of bloodshed that exceeds even that of the Nazi SS units.

The leaders of Lithuania and Estonia acted on principle, and decided to boycott the military parade in Russia honoring the Red Army, with communist hammer and sickle flags in full display. While we remember the victims of Nazism, we should not forget the tyranny that the Baltics and the rest of Eastern Europe was subjected to for over 40 years.

Communism killed 100 million people in the 20th Century, double the number who died in World War Two. America should build a memorial to victims of the Communist genocides in Ukraine, China, Cambodia, Russia, Vietnam, etc.

Russia should build it, on the site of the Lubyanka.

Better question: does it make a difference?

Sure! we should also build a memorial to all of the dumb illegal alians who die while crossing the border into the United States. Afterall we feel so terrible about it and they are only trying to do a job that Americans won't do.

Even if the sacrifices weren't willing made, they were still sacrifices and are worthy of respect.

I'm kind of torn on this. As a Lithuanian whose grandparents came to the US legally to escape one of the purges, I would hate to infringe upon the Holocaust. I realize that many Lithuanians, Poles, Gypsies, Russians/communists (anyone with the sickle and hammer symbol, 'commisar order') and others died during the Holocaust and other purges and pogroms, but the Holocaust nearly wiped out the Jewish population. 6 Million of the 12 million were Jewish.

It is estimated that about half of the european gypsies were killed. The gypsies and the Jews were the two groups killed for the crime of existing while the others were killed because there were too many of them, or because they disagreed with him/Hitler.

The Jehovah's Witnesses in Germany and Freemasons in Europe were killed, too. The Jehovah's Witnesses were given a choice to leave the camps if they renounced their beliefs, and few did. The Jehovah's Witnesses had to wear purple stars.

Oddly enough, homosexuals went from wearing a yellow armband with an A on it, to wearing pink triangles. Some things never change!

Yes. When the Honor is made directly to HOW those were sacrificed. Putin did NOT do this and NEVER has, nor NEVER will. What, is Lenin your idea of good volks? Your blatant mindset is disgustingly inept.

Well, it's hard to make a case without being called "anti-semitic", which is why I hesitated to get into this particular can of worms. Of all the mass murders in history, the destruction of the european Jews is the only one called "the holocaust", and the only one (that I know of) with a "center" in this country, even though the US helped to destroy the regime that committed the crime. There's no center for the Rawandans, Cambodians, Armenians, or for that matter, the ethnic Germans who were massacred in eastern europe in 1945. I would think that recognizing the sufferings of other peoples would in no way diminish the tragedy of the Jews in WW2.

The fact that we supplied them is ignored today. People talk about the winter stopping the Nazis. Absurd, what about all the springs, summers, and falls the Nazis were there?

I'm not a Nazi. Go ahead if you want to. But the parade in Russia was not in support of Communism it was to honor the lives lost while fighting Nazism over 20 million Russian lives. I hate Communism probably more then the next guy but to not acknowledge their bravery I think would be petty, childish and a rewrite of history. Remember soldiers fight for the man next to him, NOT for their leaders. And yes I do have a certain amount of sympathy for German soldiers that were propagandized into their beliefs especially the Hitler youth.

Russia was originally Germany's ally. Would have stayed that way if the Germans hadn't attacked. We don't owe the Russians anything.

Here's an idea for the centerpiece:

A bronze ring with many different faces from the many nationalities that have been killed, all turned inward to a central disc. Over this outer ring, a constant flow of water, like tears. On the inner disc, made of steel, we see the faces of Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. Their visages are those of agony. The ring is surrounded by fire, sybolizing Hell.

Apropos.
