PA to sound siren on 'Nakba Day'

The Palestinians are planning to mark Israel's Independence Day by sounding a siren as an expression of mourning. The siren will be sounded throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip at noon on Sunday, and Palestinians have been asked to stand still for one minute to protest the establishment of Israel.

Palestinians have been marking Israel's independence with demonstrations and rallies marking what they call the Nakba, or catastrophe.

Zakariya al-Agha, head of the PLO's refugee department, confirmed on Tuesday that the Palestinian Authority was planning to mark this year's "Nakba anniversary" by sounding a siren as Israel does to commemorate fallen soldiers and victims of the Holocaust. The PA has done this in some previous years.

"We will sound a siren for one minute in all our areas to express our grief on this painful occasion," Agha said. He added that his department, together with representatives of refugees and various PA organizations, was also planning a series of events marking the 57th anniversary of Nakba Day, which the Palestinians mark on the secular date of Israel's establishment.

Agha said a special committee had been established to prepare for the events, which will include major rallies in Ramallah and Gaza City. He said the events would underline the Palestinians' rejection of any settlement that does not guarantee the right of return for all refugees.

Leaders of various factions in the West Bank issued a statement on Tuesday in which they said that there would be no peace with Israel unless all the refugees are allowed to return to the original homes. The statement came at the end of an emergency meeting in Ramallah of representatives of Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as Syrian-backed groups like the Popular Front and the Democratic Front.

"We call on our masses in the homeland and the diaspora to mark this painful occasion by making it clear to the world and the occupation that the issue of the refugees is the core of the conflict and that there would be no solution without their return home in line with United Nations resolution 194," the statement said.

The Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights (BADIL) declared "a week of awareness of Palestinian displacement and eviction and the refugees' right to return" to mark the nakba anniversary.

It said that Palestinians will use the occasion to "draw attention to the need to halt Israel's ongoing expropriation of Palestinian land and the necessity to recognize and implement Palestinian refugees' right to return to their homes and properties in accordance with international law and UN General Assembly Resolution 194."

The center said that year's memorial is coordinated by the Committee for the Commemoration of the 57th Anniversary of the Nakba, a body consisting of representatives of refugee organizations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, members of the global Palestine Right of Return Coalition and unions, political groups, national institutions, NGOs and the PLO Department of Refugee Affairs.

Get. Over. It.

And the really ironic thing is that, had it not been for Zionism, there never would have been a possibility for a "Palestinian" state. Before WW1, the land destined to become the "Palestinian" state was part of the Ottoman empire. If not for Zionism, which led to the Mandate, and thence to partition, the land presently constituting Israel and the proposed "Palestinian" state would have been appropriated by other Arab states, exactly as the Egyptians and Jordanians did with the territory covered by the Mandate and not incorporated into the new state of Israel in May 1948.

The Arabs find it much more convenient to blame the Israelis, blame the Jews, blame the West, and blame the world for their backwardness than to look into the mirror and see the real cause.

Probably be enslaved or annihilated by their brother Arabs.

Just goes to show how much they care about "statehood." Their goal is the destruction of Israel, period.

If you'd like to be on or off this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.

Hamed of Alittihad (map experts, help me) has it right. Hope he's made to to Europe, at the very least. Or that Hamed is a "screename"

Hamed of Alittihad critcizes the Arab official position, which has accommodated aggressive Israel, in May 2002. He calls the Arab official position now as the Big Nakba (Calamity), compared to the small calamity (the establishment of Israel on the expense of the Palestinian people) 54 years, in 1948 (5/15/02).

Israel should have a very loud heavy metal concert that day. Play something old and joyous to drown the whining jihad siren.
