In British legend, mysterious lights said to lead travelers from well-trodden paths into treacherous marshes are called the "Will o' the Wisp." The title also describes malevolent spirits who lure their prey into disaster with false promises. They erect symbolic lighthouses which instead of guiding vessels to safety, lead the unwary into destruction on the rocks and shoals.
In his book "The End of Time," David Horowitz writes, "The desire for more than is possible is the cause of greater human misery than any other," which is another way of warning of the dangers of pursuing the political incarnation of the Will o' the Wisp.
Throughout human history the minds of secularists who see life exclusively in worldly terms, to the exclusion of any thought of the existence of a hereafter, have been occupied with pursuing the most elusive of all the Wills o' the Wisp: Utopia, the promised heaven on earth that in all its incarnations has led instead to perdition. Blinded by an almost religious fervor, today's Utopians blithely ignore the lessons of history that prove their quest for a perfect society to be an impossible - and often lethal - dream, and forge ahead in their determination to impose their version of worldly perfection on the American people and ultimately upon the rest of the world.
Imprisoned by their blind faith, they view anyone and anything that stands athwart their road to paradise to be an enemy of what they believe to be inevitable progress - they are progressives and they react to obstacles to what they deem to be progress with an unmatched fury. And to them progress means the triumph of Marxism - of the all-powerful state against the blessing of individual liberty.
We saw it triumph in the Soviet Union, enslaving hundreds of millions and slaughtering tens of millions. We saw it triumph in Nazi Germany under its brand of national socialism, and today we see it in Cuba and increasingly in Venezuela. In each case, for the liberty-loving individual paradise turned out to be hell.
We are witnessing this battle against individual liberty today. Frustrated by the ascendancy of those who value liberty above the empty promises of Marxist safety and cradle-to-grave security, the Marxist left is lashing out with unrestrained rage against the party and its members who they consider to be in the vanguard of the forces standing in the way of the liberation of mankind from the strictures of a senseless morality imposed by an outmoded religious faith.
It is important to follow the biblical injunction to "know thine enemy," and to understand that what we are seeing in this furious and ongoing Democrat assault on the Republican Party and its allies in what they call the religious right is not mere demagoguery arising out of their frustration over their inability to control the levers of power they once held.
Their fury is genuine - they really do believe that the conservative Republican majority and their conservative Christian and Judaic allies are the agents of an evil conspiracy, determined to prevent the American people and all mankind from achieving their rightful destiny.
That rightful destiny is life in a socialist state in a socialist world governed by a Marxist United Nations, and everything they do and everything they say is driven by that impossible - and nightmarish - dream.
Because they are utterly convinced of the rightness of their unholy cause, they enthusiastically embrace the belief that the ends justify the means. Nothing is forbidden them in this cosmic battle between the forces of good, as defined by Karl Marx, and the forces of evil, as personified by conservative Republicans and their allies in what they call the religious right.
They can lie, they can engage in the worst kind of slander against their enemies, they can use the media to spread their distortions of the issues and the characters of their foes, they can ally themselves with the butchers of the unborn, the defenders of sodomy, the promoters of pornography and unrestrained sexual license, convicted criminals whose right to vote they espouse. In their world everything goes as long as it advances their cause, no matter how deeply it is immersed in sleaze and dishonesty.
When they attack conservative Republicans for seeking to rein in an out-of-control judiciary legislating from the bench and usurping the prerogatives of the federal and state legislatures, they are in reality recognizing that their inability to achieve their secularist and Marxist schemes through legislative enactment requires the help of non-elected jurists to implement them by judicial fiat.
When, aided by a compliant mainstream media, they mount an all-out assault on Rep. Tom DeLay, they are not merely attacking a powerful Republican leader they fear but instead are seeking to remove from the scene a man whose grit, talent and determination threaten to undo much of the secular and socialist damage they inflicted on the nation in the years when they dominated Capitol Hill. He is a serious obstacle to their version of progress and he must be driven from power.
When they seek to prevent John Bolton from being confirmed as U.S. ambassador to the corrupt and Marxist-dominated United Nations, they don't oppose him because he is allegedly mean to some of his subordinates or colleagues, but because he represents a threat to the future of an organization dedicated to the same Marxist dreams that motivate them. The president has chosen a Marine to battle for U.N. reform - they want to send a Girl Scout.
In all of these instances their anger is not feigned. They see the ascendancy of the conservative Republicans and what they contemptuously call the "religious far right" as the most serious threat to their impossible dream ever to emerge. Their anger burns red hot and will not die until they have been deprived by the American electorate of any semblance of political influence.
Until that blessed day arrives, hopefully in 2006, they will continue to dream their impossible dream and inflict its misery upon the American people.

Yep. That's their goal, and it will likely be accomplished since the American sheeple don't really care about anything other than football and who Samantha on Sex and the City is sleeping with.
It won't be a "Red Dawn" scenario, rather something more along the lines of the (suppressed) miniseries "Amerika". The latter is really, really hard to get ahold of (I just finished watching it). In that scenario, most of the citizens simply roll over and others become quislings. Utterly pathetic. The movie was made in 1987. They were off by 20 years.

A peaceful solution presumes that both sides are rational enough to forego violence and simply agree to disagree. But the Machiavellian, Gramscian monsters on the Left that we oppose seek nothing less than dominion over every sphere of human thought and endeavor. And they demand that we applaud them for it, too.
They won't give up until either we're all in chains or they're all dead. I vote for the latter.

I never thought I'd see the day when another civil war would be even a dim possibiity, but I'm beginning to visualize it.
Who would fight whom?......is the question, and how?...and where? We've got radical La Mecha "Aztlan" separatists squealing about how our entire southwest rightfully belongs to them. What % of immigrants (legal and illegal) who subscribe to this fantasy is not known to me.
Next, we've got 6+ million Muslims, from 600,000 in the 1960's. How many of them are secretly "sleeping," waiting to strike?
I can feel and see the violent tensions everywhere, but I can't see what this possible coming 2nd American civil war would look like, or where it would be fought.

I honoestly believe that if the Left had unlimited power in this country, we conservatives and Christians would be in concentration camps or in ovens as soon as they think they could arrange it.
Excellent questions! Would the rest of the world just step back, watch and wait? It never occurred to me til you asked the question that an internal struggle might grow to include other nations. Under the auspices of the U.N. maybe???

I don't see the Left starting a civil war. The most violently Marxist of them are students, and they have neither the training, the equipment, the discipline, the tactics, the inclination, nor the *stones* to attempt anything larger than a riot (there's a subtle movie reference in here for you war movie fans like me). If we consider the traditional case, a leftist force capable of waging a civil war with any realistic chance of winning would require tens, nay, hundreds of thousands of combatants, with cohesive tactics, strategy, equipment, and deployment. We're talking about leftists and anarchists here—it simply isn't going to happen. They might cause trouble in several counties, but National Guard and law enforcement would get a handle on them eventually. Even if you added in a contingent of angry minorities (a'la the LA riots), I still don't see a critical mass, or anything close.
There is the guerilla war option, which I submit would be better in line with the mindset of leftists in our country, but the problems are equally insurmountable. They could assassinate as many people as they wished and it wouldn't topple our government. If anything, after the first week every cop and FBI agent would be after them like bears after honey. Even assuming a well-planned cohesive guerilla strategy, I see no way these people could ever topple our government and install their Utopian state.
In the end, though, there is the one overriding fact from which the Left cannot escape: ultimately they are cowards and won't ever attempt it. Civil disobedience doesn't risk jail time—an attempt at toppling our government risks both life and freedom.
They're all talk and no action. Pay their hotheads no mind—just watch your backs at their "rallies for peace".

The left always associates the conservatives with Nazism and fascism. The truth of the matter is that the left will lead our culture into Nazism and use facism to impose its ends. One trait of the left is that they fail to recognize truth based on facts. Their truth is how they feel about the matter. They have no more hold on the truth than a fortune teller with a crystal ball or a tarot card. For them, truth is what they are to divine from her instinctive perceptions. This way of rationalization lends itself to the setting up in power those who rule based not upon realities rooted in fact, but realities based upon feelings. Such moral relativism sets the stage for fascism.
We see in the behavior of the left their fascist tendencies. They will vandalize property that represents something they oppose. They will use court action to attack the culture they oppose. They will assault people who speak truth they oppose. They will support a fascism that rules those who refuse to ignore the facts with the force of death if necessary. They are not about truth. They are about the imposition of a nihilistic culture that rejects individual responsibility but demands conformity. It is a culture of contradictions that embraces a culture that has no guidelines and easily accepts values that contradict each other.
Nazism, in the same way believes that the force of death is necessary to weed out the unfit and move humanity to a higher order. It opposes the death penalty now, but when such a system is fully in power, will use the death penalty to expedite its Utopian dream to a higher social order. Under this system those deemed useless will be eliminated with a "happy pill" to make way for younger, more useful citizens. Nazism uses fascist tactics to achieve its ends.
Just a hunch, but I don't think it would take much effort from the lefties to gather support. It is we conservatives who are surrounded by enemies.....foreign and domestic. If the U.S. were to flounder as the only remaining super power in the world, there would be a large vacuum that would need to be filled. Question is, who could/would fill it??? The UN? God forbid!

Sounds interesting. I rarely watch a movie, and have only recently even heard of this one. I wonder if Americans would stand for a takeover. I don't think so, and apparently Marxists are of the same mind. Hence, the "march through the institutions" designed especially for gradual takeover. Death by a thousand cuts.
