Panel urged to back limit on handgun sales (Pennsylvania)

Gun-control advocates on Wednesday urged a gubernatorial advisory commission to endorse a proposal to limit handgun purchases in Pennsylvania to one per month when the panel makes recommendations next week.

"We must rid the community of so many guns, make them harder to purchase and teach people other ways to settle their disputes," Diane Edbril of CeaseFirePA told a Capitol news conference.

State Rep. W. Curtis Thomas, who also participated in the news conference, said the unlimited sale of handguns in Pennsylvania feeds a voracious underground market for illegal weapons used to commit crimes.

"This is about whether or not somebody should have the ability to buy 25 guns a month who knowingly ... then put those 25 guns in a stream of commerce in a way that they know is going to end up in death or permanent injury," the Philadelphia Democrat said.

"This is about choosing life over death, choosing peace over a society where people do not feel safe," he said.

The proposal, which Gov. Ed Rendell advocated during his 2002 election campaign, is part of a pending gun-control package sponsored by state Rep. John Myers, D-Philadelphia.

In March, responding to a spate of gunshot killings in Philadelphia and York, Rendell impaneled the Commission to Address Gun Violence, a 23-member commission that includes police, legislators and federal, state and local prosecutors. It is scheduled to make final recommendations to Rendell and the Legislature on Monday.

The commission's chairman, Philadelphia attorney Walter M. Phillips Jr., said the one-handgun-per-month proposal is "clearly on the table, as far as the commission is concerned."

Rendell, a Democrat and former Philadelphia mayor, continues to support the measure, but has not pushed it in the Republican-controlled Legislature because he is convinced it would not pass, said his spokeswoman, Kate Philips.

He believes it is "absolutely reasonable and the right thing to do," Philips said. "But the governor is also a political realist."

The gun-control activists also called for the elimination of a state law that prohibits cities and towns from imposing local gun-control ordinances and passage of legislation to require gun owners to take steps to keep the weapons out of the hands of children or criminals.

Edbril, saying she fears resistance from rural lawmakers will kill the one-a.m.onth handgun plan, noted it would not affect purchases of rifles or shotguns, limit handgun purchases by gun collectors or restrict purchases by people whose handguns have been lost or stolen.

It's really something extremely simple, but the libs dare not admit it: Philadelphia is packed with animals, and they can't control them any more. The gun-grabbers are trying to exploit this decades-long fact to impose their agenda on the entire state. I'll wait to see what the commission recommends. When they recommend the gun-grabbers' agenda (and I have no doubt they will, if they were picked by Fast Eddie), I just might send a letter to my GOP state rep. If he goes with the gun-grabbers, everyone here will hear about it. Hopefully we can muster some true-blue GOP opponents for any RINO's that go for it.

I think most big cities are starting to see that same problem crop up in the slums. That's going to be the way it is until the end of time. Even with a total gun ban, criminals will never turn their guns in, and we know what happens when a society has no guns to defend themselves. I wish you guys success in defeating this ditzty woman.

We control both houses of the legislature, so the only way she will get her way will be through RINO's. I'd be susprised if anything she wants will even make it out of committee.

It doesn't seem to bother the RINO's to stick it to us these days. They should at least change parties and become the RATS that they are. I wish you guys success in putting her down. Any win we have is a blow to the anti-gunners, and we'll take it. :-)

Normal people don't settle disputes with guns. The only 'disputes' settled with guns are gang turf disputes, and the libs either can't or don't want to deal with that directly, so they take the easy path...taking our guns. That way it appears they did something, and they can always hire some retired cop in a cop suit to praise their efforts.

Exactly! They can't get guns away from criminals because they use them to commit crimes. As far as I'm concerned until they do, they don't need to bother to try to take our guns. That's NEVER going to happen!!

The MSM does copy press releases verbatim.

It would not be surprising that it either WAS a handgun control inc press release or the reporter is an actual member.

Here's the story of party that's shady,
Who wish to live in a gun controlled world.
All of laws they wish pass, it's a mother,
It makes me want to hurl.

And the story, picks up with a man named Brady,
Who was wounded, at no fault of his own.
They weren't thinking how this would bring it all together,
They were all alone.

Till the one day when the shady liberals met this fellow,
And they knew that it was much more than a hunch.
That this group would somehow form a family.
That's the way the liberals formed the Brady Bunch.
The Brady Bunch, The Brady Bunch.

That's the way they became the Brady Bunch!

lol

Boy, if I ever had a fire, and all my ammo started cooking off, they'd have to evacuate every house in a five mile radius.

That is Hollywood nonsense. Your cartridges will pop off like firecrackers. The case will go further than the bullet since the case is lighter (simple physics).

If the statists bastards enact this, they'll try "one gun a year" next. And so on.

That is Hollywood nonsense.

It was also tongue-in-cheek. And since my ammo is in .30 cal ammo cans, it would take me only a few minutes to chuck them out the window anyway.

the republican party in Pennsylvania has taken a decidedly pro big government, anti individual freedom slant in the last 8 years. There are a few exceptions. WE have rotten government. Rotten decisions regarding public policy have been the rule not the exception. Tuesday with 77% majority tax payers authorized Rendell to borrow 635 Million Dollars for GREEN Projects. What was noteworthy was there was no mention of where the money would be spent also rendell Didi not tell us where it would come from he said he would get it in cost savings.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa
