KETCHIKAN, Alaska -- A jury found Greenpeace guilty Monday on two misdemeanor criminal negligence charges that were filed after the group's ship entered Alaska waters for an anti-logging campaign without required paperwork.
Greenpeace's ship came to Alaska to conduct an anti-logging campaign in the Tongass National Forest. The ship was carrying more than 70,000 gallons of "petroleum products" at the time, court papers said.
Under state law, a large non-tank vessel must file an oil spill response plan application five days before entering state waters. Greenpeace had not,...

Just got the news that Greenpeace was convicted in a Ketchikan district court of two misdemeanor counts of failure to comply with environmental laws. They came to Alaska to protest some logging in Tongass national forest and failed to file the proper OIL SPILL RESPONSE PLANS FOR THERE VESSELS!!!!
GREENPEACE? with no plans in case of oil spill from their vessel? This is a vessel that holds tens of thousands of gallons of diesel and other hazardous materials and was traveling in some of the most treacherous (and pritine) waters of the country. They finally got caught by their own stupid regulations. Ha ha ha!! They will pay some small fines and no jail time but, you can bet they'd be screaming bloody murder if we (Alaska) had let some corporate vessel run the inside passage of S.E. Alaska with no plans and thousands of gallons of diesel.
I suppose this is getting exactly zero air time in the lower 48? media bias strikes again.
I don't really know how this system works but, hopefully some of my fellow Freepers can post this news in some high exposure places down in the lower 48 or send it to a few talk shows. Our Alaska news is not exactly world class and I've only found a couple print articles on the net. The news is pretty fresh. the conviction came yesterday (the 10th).

I recall reading about this when the charges were first filed. The Greenies were whining that the law didn't really apply to them, and that they were being persecuted because of politics.
Yes: They always whine when they get caught in their own trap.
Yeah, the first try was for them to say that the ship (which had their name painted on it) was just a "rental" (contracted for service) so we (Alaska) should charge that company with wrongdoing. Nevermind the fact that they don't have as high a standard for the folks they do business with as they do for "Big Business".
Needless to say... we didn't buy it and charged them directly. The boat and the 70,000 gallons were in their control.
Have you guys heard any radio or TV coverage on this or is greenpeace going to get the protection of the major media as usual?
You hear about the outside trouble makers.
Natives don't believe anything the govt promises or what white people tell them about environment. Of course they have good reason to; we have an awful track record over the last 100 years. Alot to be said for traditional knowledge that our government tends to ignore exclusively.
The greenies don't control resources up here anyway; price does, always has.
>>After seein' some of the women who belong to that group, they should change their name to 'GREENPIECE".<<
Yeah, but I'll bet that in THAT area they are not all that "green."
Heh, this is actually kind of funny.
LOL.
Thanks for this news.
[snort] Oh! taste the sweet tears of sadness!

But... but those rules were supposed to be for everyone ~else~!
"All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
You just did that!
Thanks for that.
I am still new at navigating the site and the articles stack up at a blinding pace. I couldn't find any articles on fr when I was looking that night.
Still, I thought it would get more play. I'm very dissapointed with the lower 48 coverage. (but, I'm always dissapointed), ha!
