Rancho Man Accused of Vandalizing Own House

May 10, 2005

RANCHO CORDOVA -- When FOX40 News arrived at his Rancho Cordova house on Pecan Grove Way today, we found him spray painting over his own work. Apparently, the man known as 'Ty', had written phrases like "Ty take care of your own house!", which was directed at neighbors who asked Ty to mow his lawn and paint his house.

"He had written Bin Laden Must die and bad men must die, and we consider that a threat," says Randy Housewright of the Home Owner's Association.

"Just a joke," says 'Ty'. "The house is getting remodeled." Then the mystery homeowner, took his paint and his chain saw across the street to his other house.

Amidst the giggles, neighbors were legitimately concerned last night. "We have a homeowner here who is destroying the neighborhood by destroying his property ," says neighbor George Rawle.

People living in both houses tell us the owner Ty, is a kind-hearted, Christian man who allows people with medical problems to live here for free. Neighbors call it a halfway house.

I will never live in a place that is 'ruled' by a home owner's assocation.

…says Randy Housewright of the Home Owner's Association.

Yeah, says Randy, bigwig of the HOA…

I have to deal with the one-and-only HOA I’ve ever dealt with.

They’re particularly obsessed with colors. “No tropical colors” (WTF-ever that means), no “loud colors” for window dressings facing the street or sidewalk…

They’ve got an entire ~300 page CC&R book that covers just about everything. On the one hand I don’t like it because a lot of stuff has to be approved before you do any improvements of any sort. Approval is needed to re-roof, paint, install replacement windows, skylights – name it.

On the other hand they’re happy to see you improving your house and approve almost everything unless it’s silly. They’re easy to work with from what I’ve seen so far. You have to get over the initial reluctance to submitting your plans for approval – which is just about guaranteed that you’ll have to do around here.

On the other hand, it’s pretty much paint-by-numbers in a way. You do this (wait 10 days), they do that (wait 10 days), you go from there (wait 45 days), they inspect (up to 14 days), etc.

Not the end of the world…

"bin Laden must die" is not a threat. It's a good idea. Letting your grass grow too tall ... now that's scary behavior. I take pride in my well kept lawn, and I would wear my gun around any neighbors who didn't do likewise.

Damn! It was raining last Sunday, and I was outta town of Saturday, watching the Giants get smeared by the Nationals.

I hate it when the lawn hits two weeks before a mowing, I hope I didn't piss off my neighbors', like I would have you, if you lived in my neighborhood.

I'm glad you're not my neighbor.

Last summer I had to have a chat with the old woman who lives next door to me. She tries to use the fact that she's a widow on a fixed income as an excuse to skip a week here and there, but I straightened her out. "Dead husbands," I told her, "are no excuse for tall grass."

You'd love it around here...the "manicure your grass" types are upset that horse farm pastures are unsightly and they'd much rather jog beside chemical-drenched artificial-looking highly mowed golf fairways. Actually tried to eminent-domain land-grab the farm to turn it into a golf course! So much for property rights.

Which is why, despite a consistently rising incoming, I've never moved from my nice little blue-collar neighborhood.

The story behind the story sounds like some infringement on freedom of speech on his own property (although subject to HOA contract), religious discrimination and NIMBYism.

Meanwhile, the others in the community have a legitimate beef (if not a tender heart for the needy) for the possible impact on local property values, possible criminal behavior of those in the halfway house.....

Popcorn, anyone?

"Dead husbands," I told her, "are no excuse for tall grass."

Absolutely right on!

The sheep damned well better keep it chewed down, husband or no husband!

Personally, I have better things to do with valuable water than waste it on useless grass. Livestock, fruit trees, and crops rate much higher on the list.

"Letting your grass grow too tall ... now that's scary behavior."

Why is that "scary" behavior? If you would wear a gun around a neighbor who didn't become obsessed with keeping his lawn exactly 1.5 inches tall, it's YOU who are the scary one. I've seen people on their hands and knees with a pair of sissors, cutting a few "out of place" blades of grass. They end up in the mental health center eventually, and the ones who wave around guns at their neighbors end up in prison. It's simply not your business how people take care of their lawns, they have to live within city by-laws, not yours, and it's up to the city to enforce them, not you. You'll find that your neighbors like you better if you mind your own business, rather than try be their overlord.

LOL. I'm not concerned about my neighbors liking me. I'm concerned about the height of their grass. I enjoy being the grass overlord.

I guess it must be the flag of my disposition; out of hopeful green stuff woven.

The little old lady who lived next to me didn't cut here grass either, because her husband died and she needed hip surgery.

I never complained, instead, I took the half hour extra and cut her grass when I cut mine.
10 years later she died, and sinse she had no one to leave her home to, she gave it to me. I doubt that would have happened if I yelled and waived a gun in her face, or behaved in a rude uncivilized manner.

The old hip surgery excuse, huh? Whenever I hear that one I just tell them to take it to the nursing home and sell the house to someone who can get around. But if you think that's bad, you should see my wife, the overlord of the flower gardens! She's actually called the police over weedy flower beds.

You simply wouldn't get away with that if I was your nieghbor, but then, my disposition allows me the freedom to own property where there aren't any. Let me know where you live, I'll by the house next door and rent it out. :o)
Out here, a few cows might get away and go poo on your grass and stomp some nise whole in it, but there wouldn't be anything you could do about it. Try shoot it and I'll make you eat the whole thing raw.
