Even if he turns out to be Middle Eastern, keep Mehmet Agca in mind. He was a Muslim Turk who came from Bulgaria to attempt the assassination of Pope John II. He was on a KGB mission. Check him for Putin's phone number.

" Possibly to counter the fact that 250,000 Georgians broke through police lines and rushed into "Freedom Square" to see the Prez?"
Clearly not everyone loves him over yon

A hundred feet is quite a distance sometimes.
I could see how the SS could conceivably miss something like that in certain situations when their security perimeter was less than that, and/or perhaps on the move. I'm sure the Georgian security forces were responsible for the outer layers of defense at most points. After all, just how many agents can the President possibly travel with? While big, I'm sure...it can't be that huge.

An Easy Way to Make a Hand Grenade
April 28, 2005
A message entitled An easy way to build a hand grenade , was posted recently on various jihadi websites, affiliated with al-Qaeda. The message provides step-by-step instructions on how to build a hand grenade that can be wield against enemy soldiers and military jeeps.
The message explains the benefits of a hand grenade stating its explosions and shrapnel are very strong and fatal, Allah willing. It weighs approximately 200-300 grams and you can throw it a great distance.
Essentially, the instructions, accompanied by photographs, detail the ingredients and materials needed to build a pipe bomb small enough for throwing from common everyday items.
The author claims that his method of construction can cause explosions large enough to disable a vehicle and kill multiple enemies.

=====
I wonder whether it may have been one of these types of "handmade" hand grenades.
