Well, here is some commentary from the Russian side on their current situation as they see it - took it on a discussion board and translated from Russian:

Right now, no one regards us as a some one to be reckoned with.
The USA has deliberately chosen a policy of unrelenting pressure, and their only choice regarding us is to push us into a corner whenever possible. To push, and to wait for a moment we are no longer able to resist anything.
This can happen in the near 5 years, or 30, considering the awful demographic situation.
They also think that we are hopelessly behind them in the military technologies and industry, and will not represent any kind of military problem within 15 years or so.
But we are still too big for them, and still capable to show readiness for solving our problems with military force, and they understand that in a desperate situation the natural drive to seek allies may bring us into alliance with many others.
The nearest goals of USA regarding Russia are obvious - parliament elections in Georgia and Ukraine, reinforcing their status as NATO candidates. According to American experience, this should be enough for now.
The absolutely last thing they want is for us to become strong again. Their policy is sure and deliberate, they see the final goal clearly and they are capable to properly measure their actions.
There are only few things in their way. First, it is the Russia's vast energy resources and a deficit of energy in Europe and China. Therefore USA will try to minimize the significance of this factor. Second, it is the Islamic fundamentalism - Russia may not be weakened too much, she must be left with enough force to resist the Islamist pressure, but nothing greater than that. Third, it is China - USA think, and they have a good reason to think so, that China is aiming for the resources of Siberia, and the USA cannot allow this to happen.

So, what about Russia?
Russia still has no comprehensible national policy - or, to be precise, supranational policy, it can offer nothing in that respect to its own people, nor to other peoples inhabiting it, not a worthy and understandable goal to be respected. As a state, Russia right now is in fragile equilibrium. The time works neither for us, nor against us. Putin has succeeded to stabilize the situation for now, but any minor stress to the system may throw it into political catastrophe - there is nothing for us to lean on.

Anyway, it is clear, that while USA is working against it, the idea of Slavic unity with Ukraine and Belarus is impossible to realize.

Forget Russia. There is a wave of "jingoistic" patriotism sweeping Poland/Baltics. The Polish Nationalists and the Baltics are whipping up anti- russian sentiment across the region for no reason!! This is nothing but polish fascism. These cowards dont have the guts to take on a country like Russia and will probably end terrorising innocent defenseless russians inside their borders.

If you dont believe me - go to the Baltics. The Russian population there is terrified and the situation sometimes resembles Germany just before Hitler seized power. Russians are NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE unless they pass a National Exam!!!!

There is also another matter - Russians understand all too well, that they actually have the potential of becoming a superpower once again, unlike most European states. This is a very powerful drive, considering the Russian history.==

Why do you think Russia isn't superpower now? Russia is not empirial anymore but she is still superpower militarily. She possess 10000 active nukes and many thousands of delivery missiles. Still have about 40000 tanks.

She CHOOSES to use all her arsenals only for defense. But she still very strong to destroy everyone around including United States. It is superpower.
Russia continues to develop and refine her military abilities. Not in scale of USSR but she still gets many new and newset toys.
Russia still second space power on Earth. She stiil launches space ships.

Recently she overcame best production rate of Soviet Union economy. She alone with out Ukraine and others.
She is far from be poor or weak.

DYR it is laughable "analysis". Just some suspicious people toward AMerica like on this board but toward Russia which we see plenty.

With Ukraine and Bellorus Russia may have not "slavic" but "rus" union if any. Both three are decendant of Kiev Rus which is much closer then only slavic.
This union could be done only under external threat. Now when there no such threat then no union.

It is little exaggarated. Russians are all have thier the analog of american "green card" even better then green card. They can get thier national passport for going abroad.

Russians can get thier full citizenship (vote rights) if passed LANGUAGE exam not "National Exam". As I understand those requirements are not stricter then in US for accquiring citizenship.

The problem with Russians in baltics is just they want russian schools, newspapers, so on. Like mexicans in United States.
Baltics are against it. Hence there are the conflict which worsened by some national prejuduce too.

Russia is not superpower right now. The only thing that might be attributed to that status, is the nukes, and big (as in numerous) army. The nukes will be out of service in 10-15 years, and no new ones are being built, there are about two squadrons of usable fighters, the navy is nonexistant. The space industry is in such a bad shape that the guys there joke about "we can propose new space projects we are never going to make". The biggest problem is that the average age of people working in strategic industries is 50+, and the new specialist are not coming, because the wages are meager and hardly paid in these industries. Well, there is no point in this - there was an excelent article by Mark Styne not so long ago, which describes the sirtuation in its true colors. Now, is THAT a superpower? Hardly. If you don't believe me, ask the Russians in their military and aerospace discussion boards.

The newest toys... where did you dig that from?? And how do you judge the production ratio, by oil export figures?

As to the analysis, it may seem laughable to you, but it clearly illustrates what Russians themselves think of their international situation, especially when being pressurized like now. It is not some paranoia quirk off of some ultra-nationalistic discussion board, it is actually the common *public opinion*. It might not be absolutely true to the point, but this is what Russians themselves *feel*.

As to the "slavic", or "rus", unity, I agree partly with you regarding Poland, Hungary and all these folks. But the Russia, Ukraine and Belarus is a different matter altogether. These have for long time been together, almost one people. Their current division into separate states is a historical absurdity, which one day will be corrected. Mainly, this division exists because none of them is entirely happy with others form of government and Ukraine and Belarus resent the levels of corruption prevalent in Russia. Nevertheless, if the three prosper and reach a similar form of government and management, they will surely form a tight union of some sort - maybe a federation with joint government.

Then they was encirled there in Moscow and whole polish army was compeled to eat crows and each other since there were nothing to eat. Then they eventually died or partly was killed by russian militia. No one returned home alive.

I heared they surrendered and then they were all slaughtered as prisoners. But then again I heared you have some special history books in Russia.
