Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.
Here's a few helpful links.
C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.
C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.
C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.
C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.
OR FEDNET has online feed also.
A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).
THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]
Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority
And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.
THE WAR DEPARTMENT (aka The Dept. of Defense)
I was listening to Laura Ingraham this morning and she was playing sound bites of Specter's speech yesterday and it was sickening how often he blamed "both" sides---just threw his own party under the bus...
When Schumer first got up and said that Orrin Hatch (his good friend) only represents a couple of million people in his state, but HE, Schumer represents 19 million, I about choked...this argument has GOT to be shut down...as far as I am concerned the "checks and balances" he keep referring to, should go the other way, then, so that a state like Utah has as much stature as a state like New York with millions and millions more people....but whose interests are no more important that the people in Utah.
Virtually his entire presentation was a study in contradictions. He argues the importance of the Senate in protecting minority rights and then says he should have more power than Hatch because he represents more people. He says there is no reference in the Constitution to the filibuster (correct) and then says that changing Senate rules upends the Constitution. If he had a conscience, he'd be too ashamed to show up on the floor ever again.
It sounds like the Dems want to change the electoral
Something Hellary has been wanting to do for some time
Well, I see that they have coerced a so-called moderate democrat to come out and echo their tripe!
Dianne Feinstein is one of the Dems that Hatch should get up and mention how disappointed he his about some that repeat the distorted rhetoric of the left...
BTW, is it not totally disgusting when Schumer and friends are overtly on the Senate floor, trying to coerce the ELECTED Republicans to go against their constituents and go along with the dems farce and obstructionism....
Pity the poor fools that DO fall for that and vote with the dems...like McCain and anyone else that will actually have their names in the DEMOCRAT side of the ledger on this...
Does Chuckie realize that the ONLY part of the Constitution that CANNOT be amended is the proviso that each State shall have equal suffrage in the Senate?
It was really a stupid thing for Chuckie to say. There are far more small states than large ones. Does Chuckie think that being from a large state makes him more of a Senator than Hatch? Would he like to try that argument on Byrd or Leahy or Searchlight?
no flames, please
It was "throw anything against the wall that you can get your hands on and see if it sticks" day.
I know what you mean, because I bet even if there was a set in stone rule requiring 60 votes, it could still be accomplished without his whoop-de-do state of New York, or that state of leftists, California...
IOW, Schumer, get over yourself!
Chuckie want's a pi**ing contest!
Did Hatch really use that graphic??
Not today.
I think there's a date on the pic.
He's not implying that he should have more voice because he represents more people, is he?
Oh, dang---James Rosen on Fox is reporting that at 5:00 tonight, representatives of the National Security Administration will meet in a secret room for a briefing with the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding 10 memos that h
had been heavily redacted----
Condi Rice HAD said NO, and so had the NSA, yesterday. I guess they caved, because there IS gonna be a meeting tonight! Oh, and BTW, Sen. Rockefeller is insisting that he be able to attend because he is a member of the Intell. Committee. Of course, Sen. Rockefeller, along with Sen. Levin are the ones that are desperately trying to find an impeachable offense regarding the War in Iraq, in order to get Bush out of office....
I know this was not Senate action right now, but I thought ya'll might be interested in that news...
"Which would the public rather prefer?"
*Rolling my eyes*
I am curious---Sen. Cochran got up to discuss the Emerg. Supplemental Conf. report and how they were to have 2 + hours of debate and then vote early this afternoon...
All of a sudden Feinstien gets up and says she wants 30 minutes and talks about this!!! What is wrong here? Do the dems control the Senate procedures and what is supposed to happen, now? Cochoran should have told her that the time for morining business was over and to wait until they are in morning business again....
Dang, are ALL of the REps. pantywaists?
Just saw a new thread that says that on Tony Snow's show this morning, that Sen. Lott, when asked about the compromise that he is supposedly crafting with Sen. Nelson, said that he didn't care if the RePS didn't like it because, "they threw me under the bus" , so therefore, he no longer feels loyalty to the ReP party and is going on his own now....
Anyone keeping track NOW on how many Rep senators have turned their backs on the party, the President, and more importantly, their VOTERS?
What is Hellary yelling about???
BTW .. have ya seen this??
Hillary Trial Starts Tuesday

Are you kidding?
BINGO!
Think electoral
Does anyone find it JUST a little hypocritical of Hillbilly to be up on the Senate floor BLASTING the Conf. report for having the REAL ID ACT in it without the Senators being able to debate it?
I didn't see her getting upset that the Dorgan/Kerry/Durbin amendment covering up her and her husband's scheme to sic the IRS on their enemies was added on without debate on the Senate floor.....hm.........c'mon Hillbilly, why aren't you equally as outraged about that?
