Maverick GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel said Sunday that U.S. power and influence in the world is in decline, then added, "That's good news, I think."
Discussing whether the Iraq war had left the American military stretched too thin, Hagel told ABC's "This Week":
"The world is now so vastly different in its distribution of not only economic power ... but also in military and diplomatic power."
The Nebraska Republican then explained: "The great challenge of our time for America is our competitive position in the world and understanding this great diffusion of new power. The United States is no longer the dominant power on earth as we have been the last 50 years. That's good news, I think."
Though Hagel's comments could come back to haunt him if, as is widely rumored in Washington, he decides to seek higher office, the GOP maverick had some good news for the Bush administration.
Asked if he'd seen any evidence that would cause him to oppose U.N. ambassador nominee John Bolton since his confirmation was put on hold two weeks ago, Hagel said, "I have not seen anything that would keep me from voting for him ... from what I know now."
He did add, however, that he reserved the right to change his mind if more credible allegations about Bolton came to light.
Then it would appear that, from your perspective at least, the sun has already set on America. Why fight it? Just let go and drown. Second place ain't so bad. Or third. Or 60th. We've had our day in the sun. The times they are a-changin'.
And all the rest of those world-weary, post-modern, angst-ridden cliches.
Hagel's a moron bump.
Problem with GWB foreign policy of crusading for democracy is the armed forces needed to back up the diplomacy is too small. 600 ship Navy, 16 division Army and 33 tactical air wing Airforce would do the trick. Plus we also need a good production/manufacturing base to provide parts, apares and replacements. Since Bush 41, the US moved all these capabilities overseas to Communist China. Batteries and computer chip manufacturing is next.
Don't think a lot of us out here haven't thought about that. Someone asked me the other day if I thought Hagel had a shot at the Presidency in '08. My response was, "Of what country?"
I am with you -- I was just in Maine visiting my daughter and her husband in the Navy and everyone I talked to really likes Snowe and Collins. In that area they are considered conservative Yankees. In Oklahoma, they would be liberal but Inhofe and Coburn probably would not get elected in Maine for being too conservative and those two women wouldn't get elected in Oklahoma.
Neither one of them trash Republicans and for the most part vote with the Republicans -- trust Snowe and Collins to vote with Republicans more than I trust Hagel, Spectre, and McCain. Nebraska and Arizona should be sending conservatives to the Senate IMHO. Chaffee is probably as good as we can get out of RI.
"Chuck Hagel wants to be your President. Chuck Hagel wants to be your Commander In Chief.
'The great challenge of our time for America is our competitive position in the world and understanding this great diffusion of new power. The United States is no longer the dominant power on earth as we have been the last 50 years. That's good news, I think.'
Does Chuck Hagel deserve to be our President? Does Chuch Hagel deserve to be our Commander in Chief? We need someone who believes in our country. We need a President who is not afraid to be a leader. That leader is --insert name here-- in 2008."
lol.....he IS in a land of his own mind, isn't he. As a strong supporter of the Republican party in Nebraska, I can tell you we ain't none too happy with Hagel. Trust me, he hears from us every day, and he WILL hear from us at the polls. I doubt he could carry his own state in a presidential bid.
Unbelievable!
What is wrong with the voters in his state? He should be on his way out of office tomorrow.
I do however think that more drastic measures need to be in place to prevent any further decline.
Maybe we can have a depression soon. This would make the jackass ecstatic
Translation: If my RAT friends threaten to leak credible allegations against myself, I will have no choice but to vote against Bolton.
There's nothing wrong with the voters in Nebraska. We voted in a conservative Republican who has since become a RINO and a liar. We will, however, do everything in our power to show him the door before the next election.
I wonder if Hegel and McCain share brain tumors.
Only in his own mind. He has about as much chance of winning the Repub nomination in 08 as Zell Miller has of winning the Demorat nomination.
He has been making his moves in the media and stupidly making a jackass of himself. Whenever I see him make any statements I cannot understand what the hell he is trying to say. He is all over the place and he is a girly man. He has already alienated the base so he might as well give up now. Somehow he looks like he is trying to get in touch with his feminine side. I hope he does not wear P&B. If I see him on TV now I lunge for the remote.
The man has bought himself a one-way ticket to Madeline Albrightville.
what is with this boob? if he was trying to say that this will reawaken our competitive spirit and force us to be even better ok but if he is looking for a multi-polar world again this yutz is off his rocker
Heh, "sows up." Most appropriate.
