Dismay at US Koran 'desecration'

Pakistani officials say they are "deeply dismayed" over reports that the Koran was desecrated at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay. The latest edition of the American Newsweek magazine said such tactics were used to rattle suspects.

It says that US personnel on one occasion flushed a copy of Islam's most holy book "down the toilet".

Pakistan, a conservative Muslim nation, is also a key US ally in its war against terrorism.

'Highly objectionable'

Pakistani foreign office spokesman, Jalil Abbas Jilani, told the AFP news agency Pakistan was also concerned about "the highly objectionable and regrettable treatment meted out to the detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre".

Mr Jilani said the reported act of sacrilege had shocked people of every faith around the world.

"The government of Pakistan condemns the incident and demands that an inquiry should be conducted to bring to justice the perpetrators of this shameful act," he said.

Insulting the Koran and Islam's Prophet Mohammed is regarded as blasphemy and punishable by death in Pakistan.

In an interview last week with the BBC's Haroon Rashid, Abdul Rahim Muslim Dost, an Afghan prisoner recently released from the Cuban detention centre, said a number of Arab prisoners had still not spoken to their investigators after three years to protest at the desecration of the Koran by guards.

Mr Dost also said inmates' beards were shaved and the prisoners were shouted at during interrogations.

The US is holding about 520 inmates at Guantanamo Bay, many of them al-Qaeda and Taleban suspects captured in Pakistan and Afghanistan following the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.

NO. As I mentioned earlier, there's nothing there that I have not heard before.

See, I waded thru some of his rambling diatribes, and sometime just before I lost interest and fell asleep at my desk as Mr.B descended into another round of Christian bashing and whines about Western civilization in general, a few things did manage to catch my eye.

One of my favorite comments was:

It was then that I asked myself why he decided to come here and lecture us about history when there are Islamic sites to go to where intolerance is being preached today, and airing the problems at those sites or within Islam instead.

Take for example, one of my old favorites, the hugely popular mainstream mainstream Islamic site, Islam Q+A. Their response to the simple question "Why can’t the Jews and Muslims live together in peace?

Your logic in almost every sentence is unfathomable. I will address your phrase in the parentheses and then go on from there.

Eleven to twelve million pour souls perished in those camps during the long five year battle to destroy Hitler. My great uncle who was Dutch and not a Jew was one of those souls. Of the millions that were murdered by Hitler approximate 50% were Jewish. My recollection could be faulty but I don't remember any Muslim country declaring war on Hitler.

My question to you, why didn't the Muslim countries come to the rescue of the Jews and non-Jews in Germany?

Why can I as a Christian woman NOT travel freely to and from Saudi Arabia? Why do males of non-Muslim faiths have to sign a document stating that they will accept the death penalty if caught with alcohol or pornography? Why can't Saudi women vote or even drive?

Why didn't Christians riot like the Muslim barbarians when the following happened?
