Well, of course Edith Piaf is without equal.
And Paris Combo is enjoyable:

Today I was (don't hate me) listening to a mix CD from Williams-Sonoma (Yes, the ones at The Mall) entitled "La Mer," part of their "Drink Companion" series...but I wasn't drinkin' in the middle of the day. Honest! ;)

Way back when (95, 96?) I had a Texas Instruments hand held organizer. It stored addresses, had a conversion feature, limited graphics for maps, calculator, translator for several languages and even a few games. It was cheap under $100 - and very useful as I was a cab driver. I even had a cell phone.
Now that Im retired again, I havent bothered to replace it after accidentally leaving it on the dash to cook all day. I even rid my self of that evil cell phone.
Im Free!
I have an old cassette deck in my cars system. I have several CD players at home. My bedroom entertainment center has sleep modes for auto shut down if I need help falling asleep. Im not to lazy to flip a tape or change a CD.
Why would I want an iPod? Guess Ive entered Fuddy-Duddyville too.

I still have a large collection of vinyl albums and a turntable! My vacuum tube amp died, and couldn't be repaired economically.

I just picked one up last week. All I'll say is that life can be perfectly wonderful without one, BUT once you try it, you'll be hooked!

The dynamic range is audibly reduced as well as the detail in the top end. I don't perceive it as a trivial difference at all.
For most music it wont make much of a difference. For orchestral or choral it will but for people who listen to hip-hop and some modern rock, quality is meaningless.

Sorry to disappoint you. I'm never disappointed. You perform exactly as expected.

The concept is similar. You use MP3's which compress the music by tossing inaudible sounds at the top and bottom of the spectrum. The compression ratio is about 10:1 so you can fit a lot more of these in a smaller space. There are competing compression schemes that tend to throw out less stuff. That said...CD quality? Well, any true audiophile that is worth their salt will tell you that CD's are not comparable to vinyl quality which is not comparable to reel to reel quality. For the rest of us humans however, ambrose is right. The quality of the MP3 and newer compressions is so good that it has prompted massive threats and lawsuits by the music industry as the file size allowed music to be exchanged as easily as Xerox copies.

You can record talk radio from the internet using software, I use "Replay Radio", and listen to it the next day.Thanks. I'll look into that service. I suppose that would work on the days I miss Rush (I have his 27/7), but I really want to keep up w/the current news. I'm also not sure how much time I want to give over to another device - recording stuff for the next day just sounds like a another technology chore, and I've got enough of them.

There are non-Apple iPod-like devices with FM receiversDrat! I almost got excited until I recalled that most talk radio is AM. Good start tho. I guess I could listen to NPR. : )

It is biased to the pocket pc system. Palm is ok too, I just do not know much about it. Palm had to many limitations when I chose.
Articles, suggestions etc...

It's pretty painless, records automatically, then puts it into the iTunes list, you just stick you pod into the dock and it does the rest.

Personally, I can hardly wait for this IPOD FAD to pass and it will, once cell phones become mp3 players.

I do the same thing with my "Stereo Link" which while not portable, allows me to listen to music from my hard drive on my home stereo. I LOVE my Stereo Link and haven't messed with a cd in years.

Our granddaughter in high school was obliged to have her dad buy an POD for all of her school work assignments. She uses it daily and loves the thing. Now, I may buy one, but how do I get my extensive collection of CDs and vinyls onto an iPod? Sorry, but I'm not hip to the tech on the matter.
