As border debate rages, immigrants' fears rise

....snip......

"Why are they so angry?" asked Teresa Gonzalez, 57, a Mexican immigrant and naturalized citizen.

"They," according to Gonzalez, include a variety of individuals and groups:

• Last month, volunteers calling themselves Minutemen descended on the Arizona border to deter illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States, and a Southern California organization announced plans to do the same near San Diego this summer.

• Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised the work of the Minutemen, saying, "They've done a terrific job."

• Earlier this week, Southern California Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, submitted a proposed initiative that would establish a state police force to enforce immigration laws.

• And the U.S. Senate is poised to approve a measure that would, among other things, discourage states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Gonzalez fears these elements are combustible and could spark violence.

She also knows there's no simple answer to her question.

Paul Rosenzweig is a senior legal research fellow at the Heritage Foundation. "There's a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the current (immigration) system," he said.

Though the Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank, Rosenzweig said liberal immigration advocates agree that change is needed.

"I don't think there's any consensus on what the right answer is," he said.

It seems everyone has jumped into the immigration debate, from President Bush - who has advocated a guest worker program - to California's GOP governor.

One popular theory is that Schwarzenegger's comments were a politically motivated attempt to boost his sagging poll numbers.

But activists on all sides offer a variety of reasons for recent immigration-related debates, border patrols and proposals.

The importation of left wing citizens will slow down the Republican cause in this country for generations.

Could you please back these statements up with facts. Otherwise, please stay on topic and do not race bait.

As immigrant Ayn Rand said to the jackass who was heckling her for her Russian accent when she was campaigning for Wendell Wilkie, a Republican candidate, in 1940: "I chose to be an American, what did you ever do?"

No one here is complaining about anyone of any skin color speaking in any accent. ......as long as they're here legally, are productive and law-abiding citizens, and love this country and the principles upon which it was founded (as Ayn Rand was, and did).

Your playing of the "race card" is both misguided and reprehensible in the extreme.

Congratulations, folks! Your anti-hispanic virulence has just made the GOP a permanent, whites only, minority political party.

That is race baiting and has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.

Most people on FR would support a guest worker program as long as it wasnt a citizenship factory

Do you really believe that? A lot of us believe as far as the invasion goes, any opening will just be horribly exploited. The Dems want low-income voters, the 'Pubs want low-income labor.

I for one would want all borders shut to new residents, temporary or not. I would also like US citizens to have the right to claim jobs held by non-citizens, even if it means revoking green cards.

Maybe I'm extreme, but I do suspect my views are closer to the mainstream than yours are.

I think youre making the same mistake libertarians make. They seem to want to jump to the big stuff (open borders, decriminalised drugs) before we take care of the mundane (public schools, welfare state, property rights). Do those things first and Id be right there with you. Import left wing citizens, put their kids in public schools, land a percentage of them on welfare, a bunch of them in marxist academia, and its not hard to predict where they will end up.

Please point out to me which of my statements plays the "race card."

My pleasure.

Post #11: "I doubt that some people posting on this issue distinguish between "illegal Mexican immigrants" and Hispanics who were here generations before they were. And ultimately, they may direct their rage on ALL hispanic-looking individuals."

All criminal foreigners deported. Mexican, Russian, whatever.

All people who have entered this country illegally are criminal foreigners in violation of federal immigration laws.

Yeah Youre probably a little extreme though I understand completely where youre coming from. Im not a supporter of Bushs plan. I should have been clear on that. The guest worker program I would except would have many stipulations:
1)All the workers would have to return home along with family and any anchor babies. (const. amendment if necessary)
2)No welfare for guest workers.
3)No significant increase in those granted permanent residency (or no increase, I dont know the numbers offhand)
4)A dramatic decrease in naturalization.

If Bush would compromise with the Tanc crowd with something like that list we could pass it tomorrow. IMO

I agree with you USMC Veteran. I'm tired of the baiting that is actually being done by those who acuse others of "race baiting".

It happens continually on FreeRepublic. We should invent a new rule akin to Godwin's Law.

Adapting the language from Godwin's Law:

  1. If someone brings up race baiting in general conversation when it wasn't necessary or germane without it necessarily being an insult, it's probably about time for the thread to end.

  2. If someone brings up race baiting in general conversation when it was vaguely related but is basically being used as an insult, the speaker can be considered to be flaming and not debating.

  3. If someone brings up race baiting in any conversation that has been going on too long for one of the parties, it can be used as a fair excuse to end the thread and declare victory for the other side.

I agree, but both sides of the issue need to watch the taunting. I've learned that facts tend to shut most people up, or atleast change their opinion. But blatant race baiting has no place on any site.
