In a nutshell, you just summed up my opinion, with the caveat that I would still like more information on what the witnesses report hearing.

Well not directly... but I did get called unpatriotic and stupid for suggesting that 17 year olds should know not to curse at teachers and that it is not a violation of human rights to have rules about cell phones... The I was asked if I worked for the school board. Does that count?
I am certainly not on the "school's side" on this but I do understand a need for rules and order in a school, together with flexability and compassion, not in place of.

I happen to be a school teacher myself, but given the details as I am aware of them, the teacher could have handled this without having a confrontation.
If I had been in her situation after finding out that the call was from his mother, I would have remained by his side until the call was completed.

Long ago I was a science department head at a local high school and would have asked a number of questions before going into confrontation mode.
"Is that call and emergency?"
"Is your mother OK?"
"Would you like to talk to someone"
Followed by
"We do have rules about cellphones, we can make arrangements for you to talk to your mother- I know it's got to be hard on both of you with her being in Iraq. But if you turn your phone on during the day again without permission, I will have to give you a detention."

Makes sense to me. Compassion along with responsibility.
I hope it is not an ettiquette breach to mention Democratic underground (and I won't link to them) but I find it interesting to see how thye seem to be coming to similar conclusions over there -this is way more agreement between FreeRepublic and DU than I've seen before.. Except, of course, they blame Republicans. :)
Those who can't teach go into administration....and if are a good teacher and want to go into adminstration they do not want you because you are not a yes man..

Well, the main concern with the NEA, as I see it, is that they are about protecting the jobs of current teachers rathers than figuring out how to get the best teachers from the best univesities with the highest grades and test scores.
I've seen teachers whose SATs when they were in high school were too low to get into the schools that the parents were trying to get their kids into... that's a serious problem.
I would agree it seems to protect a lot of bad teachers...I hate to keep slamming teachers because my kids have had some wonderful teachers...interesting those wonderful teachers were Christian and conservative

I personally have not found any trends in whether liberals or conservatives make better teachers - except when ideology gets in the way of objectivity - and that can happen on either end of the spectrum.

I like it that we find stuff to agree on...but DU is too stupid to know any different.
They think "zero tolerance" is a conservative idea.
