Paul, I do not disagree with you my friend.

I happen to be a school teacher myself, but given the details as I am aware of them, the teacher could have handled this without having a confrontation.

If I had been in her situation after finding out that the call was from his mother, I would have remained by his side until the call was completed.

Agreed.

Long ago I was a science department head at a local high school and would have asked a number of questions before going into confrontation mode.

"Is that call and emergency?"
"Is your mother OK?"
"Would you like to talk to someone"

Followed by
"We do have rules about cellphones, we can make arrangements for you to talk to your mother- I know it's got to be hard on both of you with her being in Iraq. But if you turn your phone on during the day again without permission, I will have to give you a detention."
