Senator pushes to exempt illegal immigrants' vehicles from being impounded
By Harrison Sheppard Staff Writer
SACRAMENTO - Stymied by his efforts to provide driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, has proposed a measure that would exempt undocumented motorists from vehicle-impound laws. Under current law, police can impound for 30 days the vehicle of a motorist caught driving without a valid license. Cedillo's bill would exempt those who don't have a license simply because they are not legal U.S. residents.
Cedillo said law enforcement resources should be dedicated to pursuing serious driving offenses such as drunk driving, not licensing violations by undocumented immigrants.
"That's what the money should be spent for, not towing people's cars who are taking their citizen-kids to school, church or the supermarket," Cedillo said. "It's just a bad policy and it doesn't make sense."
Unlike his measure that would make illegal immigrants eligible for licenses, which was repealed under pressure from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cedillo has pushed for his new bill quietly.
In fact, one of the strongest opponents to Cedillo's driver's-license measure, Mike Spence, president of the conservative group California Republican Assembly, was unaware of the latest bill until contacted for comment.
Spence said the bill appears to apply a "double standard" because legal residents whose licenses were suspended or revoked still would be punished.
"If you're a citizen and you break one law, your car will be impounded for 30 days. If you're already breaking another law and you break this law, you get away with it free. It's a "Get-your-car-out-of-impound-free card' for illegal aliens, and it's wrong."
His sentiment was echoed by at least one local immigration activist, who added that by making the proposal, Cedillo himself is breaking the law.
"He's not interesed in abiding by the law, as his oath of office requires him," said Andy Ramirez, chairman of Friends of the Border Patrol, a Chino group that supports Border Patrol agents. "The only thing he's interesed in is breaking the law and allowing lawbreakers to do just that.' -SNIP-
Another good name for him is "Seditious Cedillo".
Thanks for the ping, onyx. I'll check it all out this weekend.

Geeez, why not detail it and top off the tank before handing them back the friggin keys?
Hey Gil....meet Mr. Louisville Slugger...
I think they'd start shooting and ask questions later. One thing's for d**n sure; there'd be a lot less traitors when they were done.
Yeah, because he is the ONLY one responsible for this, right? All this happened in 5 years, huh? To blame ONLY the President makes you sound like every liberal out there right now ... all problems are Bush's fault. Way too easy of a cop-out answer
I am not saying this about you specifically, I am saying that about everyone who blames it only on Bush's failure to act on border security. I know the borders need securing and I am very angry that the Prez isn't stepping up to the plate on this issue (that's been debated many times here amd elsewhere).
But that is not what my question was about. My question was why are we giving the ones currently living here given every advantage possible, including ones me and my children don't have. Ones that people fought and died for in our wars for, yet their children and grandchildren don't have.
Yeah, I know. Somehow, I don't think the types that rushed to join the service after Pearl Harbor would be handing everything over to these people.
Would the last American leaving California, bring the flag!
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but, our great Nation has already been givent to the UN. Don't believe that? Read the UN charter, and pay special attention to the part where it says: Shall supersede Constitutions of each Nation. . . . ."
Why do you think no one is willing to close the border? They cannot, because the USA is nothing more than a "region" and no one can stop other regions from crossing other regions to work or play!
Yellowstone Park is a UN biosphere, and the Liberty Bell is controlled by the UN. Hey, I did'nt believe it either, until I did a google search and blew my mind!!!!!!
Have a very good day.
Give them a chance to make peace with God and send the bodies back to mexico for internment
CA. got just what it asked for. The rest of the country better wake up.....it's getting late.
This has been going on for years, no one has said or done anything about it.
Fight it now, or give the country to them!!!
Don't forget that the liberals were running the country for over 40 years, and it was just recently, starting in 1994, that we managed to get Republican majority in the federal government. It takes time to undo the damage liberals have caused. They also still have their judges in power. (Why do you think the Democrats are filibustering Bush's nominees, even though such a thing has never been done before?)
We need to stop allowing judges to dictate from the bench--we need to undo decades of liberalism--we all know that. Just like Rome wasn't built in a day, it will take time and effort, and it probably won't hurt to remind the politicians why we elected them in the first place. (If they don't hear from us, they think the MSM view of the country is accurate.) The Minuteman project is a nice reminder, I think.
The Minutemen were HUGELY successful in reframing the debate, something I didn't expect. But the poster was right that they were lucky they didn't get wacod.
How about a citizen intitiative AMENDMENT requiring all arested/ticketed if they are a US citizen.
How about a california AMENDMENT making english the mandatory language.
It's more than 20% of the prisoners. You can bet all of Lou Dobbs stats on this are under, but if he's reporting on the problem its progress.
This particular legislator must have many non-citizens who vote illegally for them.
