Senator pushes to exempt illegal immigrants' vehicles from being impounded
By Harrison Sheppard Staff Writer
SACRAMENTO - Stymied by his efforts to provide driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, has proposed a measure that would exempt undocumented motorists from vehicle-impound laws. Under current law, police can impound for 30 days the vehicle of a motorist caught driving without a valid license. Cedillo's bill would exempt those who don't have a license simply because they are not legal U.S. residents.
Cedillo said law enforcement resources should be dedicated to pursuing serious driving offenses such as drunk driving, not licensing violations by undocumented immigrants.
"That's what the money should be spent for, not towing people's cars who are taking their citizen-kids to school, church or the supermarket," Cedillo said. "It's just a bad policy and it doesn't make sense."
Unlike his measure that would make illegal immigrants eligible for licenses, which was repealed under pressure from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cedillo has pushed for his new bill quietly.
In fact, one of the strongest opponents to Cedillo's driver's-license measure, Mike Spence, president of the conservative group California Republican Assembly, was unaware of the latest bill until contacted for comment.
Spence said the bill appears to apply a "double standard" because legal residents whose licenses were suspended or revoked still would be punished.
"If you're a citizen and you break one law, your car will be impounded for 30 days. If you're already breaking another law and you break this law, you get away with it free. It's a "Get-your-car-out-of-impound-free card' for illegal aliens, and it's wrong."
His sentiment was echoed by at least one local immigration activist, who added that by making the proposal, Cedillo himself is breaking the law.
"He's not interesed in abiding by the law, as his oath of office requires him," said Andy Ramirez, chairman of Friends of the Border Patrol, a Chino group that supports Border Patrol agents. "The only thing he's interesed in is breaking the law and allowing lawbreakers to do just that.' -SNIP-
Best of all, they get to keep their AK-47, something else that's illegal but, hell, who's counting.
Okay, enough is enough. Why pretend any more? Let's face it ... America has pretty much giftwrapped California and given it to the illegal immigrants. Just hand them the keys already & get it over with.
How can people who were not born here and entered this countey illegally be given far more rights than I will ever have??????
Man, if our forefathers could see us now. They'd either laugh in our faces or slap us silly.
This is OUR country, not there's!
What is wrong with us?
We're asleep at the switch. It riles me, too.
This is a feel good for the illegals until it comes down. Oh and it is COMING DOWN. Hide and watch.
It hasn't been our country for a long time now. It's the politician's country, and they'll happily sell it out from under us for more power.
Yes, this is indeed Twilight Zone material!
Perhaps rather than impounding illegal aliens' cars, which would make it unfairly difficult for them to retrieve them after they're deported to Mexico, perhaps they could be air-dropped to Mexico by helicopter, preferably from a height of 100 feet or so.
There is nothing wrong with us. It's the whores we elect. They say one thing and do another.
How can we stop it? 50% of our population is leftist, and the rest of us, well the Minutmen took a big risk; any politician could have easily ordered the Waco treatment on them and thank god that never happened. Bush is way too soft on the issur, but it could get worse in 2008. Hillary? I don't even want to think about how much worse she will be.
The alien should get to escape the impoundment -- if he consents for himself and his family to be towed in said car by border patrol to Mexico.
Before the Minutemen Project brought attention to this issue, the MSM used the term "Immigrant" as a synonym for "Illegal Alien".
Today, while channel surfing, I saw the screen banner "Illegal Alien Crisis" on CNN of all places.
I would have expected to see one of these first on CNN:
The guy just keeps plugging away. He knows where he wants to go. At least the guy is what you see is what you get.
UH?!?!
