U.S. officials are working feverishly to decipher numbers and apparent codes in a notebook retrieved from suspected al Qaeda leader Abu Faraj al-Libbi, ABC News has learned.
Al-Libbi -- believed to be third in command of al Qaeda leader after Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri -- was arrested by Pakistani authorities on Monday.
He is suspected of leading two failed assassination attempts on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
Sources said officials believe al-Libbi's seized notebook contains "hot" contact information. They said officials are hopeful the notebook contains useful information because al-Libbi was stunned when he was captured.
One senior official described al-Libbi as "shocked" and enraged.
"He thought he was invincible," the source said. "He was caught with his pants down. This was not the time and place of his choosing."
Al-Libbi was trying to destroy the notebook when he was apprehended, multiple sources said.
I'd bet he had a ruggedized laptop. Trying to intentionally damage one would then be a nice irony.
It's so good when they let the world know we found secret notebooks or computers. This way the bad guys can change things before we can cash in on the info we find.STUPID MOVE
Sure hope we can nab the cells here in the States.
I would like to stun him with 27,000 volts.
Intel reports that the pages of the notebook is covered with hearts and "AFAL + UBL Forever." There are several angsty poems, a representative example being:
You cannot have him, Zarqawi
Osama belongs to me
You are a hack
I'll win him back
When I kill the Kafir he'll see.
In all the previous instances where we have captured top-level terorists, we have successfuly concelad the fact for months, as we extracted, then took advantage of, the intelligence geained. Now, we have this perfect ops, where US developed intelligence is given to the Pakistanis, and they execute a perfect capture..the bad guys and all his hardware and other stuff, yet somehow it just "leaks" out that we have him, and the valuable info.....
It doesn't compute..MY take is that we leaked it..we wanted it to come out..so why?..well..assume we have a pretty good idea on a particular area where OBL might be hiding...So, we have the area surrounded, and all resources..satellite, UAV, humint..all of it..is watching the area...24/4..so, now, you want to stir up the beehive..see what runs...so, you let the info leak...maybe inducing OBL to try and flee to a new safe area..W may already have him captured..if not, really soon...
I heard that, on the cover, he had written "Mrs. Osama Bin Laden" several times, with a heart as a dot over the I.
Either this info is old enough to let it out ... or someone stumbled into our intellegence services because he thought CIA was short for "cafeteria".
Goody! Another terrorist laptop. The last one netted...what was it? 250 arrests in 16 countries?
I like how you think buddy..
If the info is hot, we don't know about it.
If we know about it, the info is not hot.
My same thought. What a bunch of idiots. They're supervisors should fire whoever told these reporters about this.
Lives are being lost. This happenned before where people got away cuz of political pressure from the kerry camp and the bush admin blabbed about some guy.
He tried to destroy his laptop by installing a beta version of Longhorn. That's what I'd do.
This during the same time frame folks are circling the wagons in the Bekka Valley. (Posted yesterday, it think)
LOL
Let's hope you're right.
I don't want to know about this.....,Why is this being reported!!!!
