Maryland woman hires attorney, says cops refuse to give her copy of her 911 call.
WASHINGTON, D.C. The Maryland woman who told authorities U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood choked her in his Washington apartment has hired a law firm and says police have refused to give her a copy of her 911 call.
Cynthia Ore, 29, of Rockville, said she initially made the request months ago, but is pursuing it now after being encouraged by friends and family members to take legal action.
In an interview Wednesday, Ore said she believes Washington, D.C., police were more concerned about the welfare of Sherwood, a Republican from Tunkhannock, when they responded to his apartment at 1 p.m. Sept. 15.
Who would you help, a young girl or a member of Congress? asked Ore, who said she has lived in fear since the incident. He lives in the Hill House so they knew. Its mostly congressmen and also senators.
Attorney Darcy A. Shoop confirmed Thursday that the Rockville, Md., law firm she works for has been hired by Ore, but Shoop wouldnt comment further on the law firms plans.
Ore said several police officers responded to the scene and were coming into and out of the apartment. She said the officers removed Sherwood from the apartment, then took him into his bedroom, while an officer talked with her.
While inside the apartment, the officers walked around the apartment and dug through her personal items, such as clothes she had there, she said.
A Washington Metropolitan Police report states that Ore told police she locked herself in a bathroom and called 911 after Sherwood choked her for no apparent reason while giving her a backrub in his D Street apartment.
Sherwood, 64, told police he was giving Ore a backrub when she jumped up and ran to the bathroom, the report stated.
Police said they saw no visible injuries on Ore and had trouble getting to the bottom of the story.
Based on interviews with both parties and no physical evidence of injury to (Ore), there was no probable cause to make an arrest or reasonable cause to believe (Ore) was assaulted, the report stated.
Both parties have left out significant information or are not willing to discuss in detail what actually happened, the police incident report says, noting that Ore did not seem to be of sound mind.
Ore admits she was frazzled when talking with police.
I was shocked. I was frozen, said Ore, who works in her familys restaurant business.
It was not my purpose to send him to prison. I was just trying to get out of there OK.
Ore said Sherwood, a married man, was angry because she showed up to the apartment late that afternoon.
While police say she changed the subject several times, Ore insists she never withdrew her statement to police and believes they didnt give her complaint proper attention.
Sherwood has previously declined to discuss specifics of the incident and described Ore as a casual acquaintance. On Tuesday Sherwood issued an apology for the pain and embarrassment I have caused my family and my supporters.
Ore disputed Sherwoods characterization of their relationship and said they have been lovers since 1999, when they met at a Young Republicans meeting.
The officer who wrote the report, Nicholas Deciutiis, has not commented on the incident.
Speaking in general terms on Thursday, a spokesman for the department said officers should know where high-ranking officials live, but he said those officials do not receive preferential treatment.
Nobodys above the law, said Master Patrol Officer Maurice Thompson. It behooves you to know who the high-ranking people are. Sometimes things are handled more delicately because it could draw media attention. If someones dog ran away, no one would care. But if the presidents dog ran away, it would draw media attention.
Ore says she was denied a copy of the 911 tape by police in November. The Times Leader also has asked for a copy of the tape and was told it would not be released without a court order.
Sherwood did not return a call Thursday for comment. An attempt to reach Sherwood or his wife at their home on Sherwood Lane in Tunkhannock Township Thursday afternoon was also unsuccessful. A woman who identified herself as Sherwoods sister-in-law said no one was at the home. She declined further comment.
Cynthis (sic) Ore involved in an incident with Congressman Don Sherwood.
Not a real blonde, but acts like one.
This woman claims to be 29?
29 years old? I hate to sound unchivalrous (Well, no I don't), but that is a very tired-looking 29.
Your mileage may vary, I guess.
